A cessna 172 flown by CAP was flying near edwards AFB:
Cessna: Edwards control, this is capflight 3170could you tell me my current ground speed?
Edwards control: CAPflight 3170 current ground speed 120 knots.
Cessna: Thank you Edwards, that's what my DME is reading CAPfligth 3170.
Hearing this a Navy guy, not wanting to be outdone comes on the line:
Navy: Edwards control this is Navy 123, what is my current ground speed?
Edwards: Navy 123 current ground speed is 450 knots.
Navy: Thank you Edwards, that is what my DME is reading too, Navy 123.
Then another guy comes on the radio:
Otherguy: Edwards control this is airforce 549 could you please tell me my current ground speed?
Edwards: Airforce 549 I'm sorry but we dont have you on radar.
Airforce: Try looking at 75000 ft.
Edwards: Ok, I got you, current ground speed 1400 knots.
Airforce: Thank you Edwards, That is what i am reading on my DME too, airforce 549.
Edwards: Airforce 549, are you a SR-71?
Airforce: Afermative edwards control. Airforce 549.

Needless to say, they didnt hear much from the Navy for a while.

I've seen it before, and I don't think it's a joke, more of an amusing story worth a small giggle. :D
