A tour guide is showing a group of American tourists around HMS Victory in Portsmouth  Harbour.........
"And this" said the tour guide, pointing to a brass placque on the deck,  "is where Nelson fell" " I ain't suprised" shouts out one of the Yanks, " Iv'e tripped over the goddam thing twice already"   ;D

Andrew, :o

Admiral Nelson, my dear boy, was one of England's greatest hero's.

He fought the battle of Trafalgar. You Must have heard of him!!!!!! His statue is on the top of a bloody great pole in TRAFALGAR SQUARE, London ;)

I cry with despair  :'(  History my son, history :'(

Sorry, I went to public school ;D
Back when I was in school through the mid 80's most of our history lessons were one sided, meaning if it didn't have to do with America we didn't study much on it.
A majority of study went into the founding of our great nation, major battles of wars in which America was the biggest influance. And of course the Presidents.
Very little time was spent on major breakthroughs such as flying, automobiles and space exploration.
One year we were forced World History which was a graduation requirement, which again focused mostly on events that involved America. So you can see our lessons were biased. Now i'm not speaking for every school here in the US!! Just the one I went to.
Most of the history that I know was based on self teaching, if I found a point in time or major event interesting I would (and still do!) get anything and everything available I could on the subject and read, watch and listen.
And that was back in the 70-80s, so I can't even think of what little they teach today with all of the PCness crap.
I do know that thee are many pieces of great literature removed from schools just because of PC so I don't expect that the children of today are learning much anyway.
And I truly hope that I'm wrong.
All I know is that my step daughter who I speak to on a weekly basis (divorced and she lives in KY, FYI) isn't reciving the education that she should do to poor teaching and the fact that there are things the school thinks should not be taught. War for example, reason: They belive that it will promote violence! KID YOU NOT!! That is what I was told at a parents/teacher conferance!
Sad world we live in today :'(
But I'll look into this Nelson character to see what the humor is all about ;D

P.S. I hope they teach spelling!! I think I might go back!! :-[

Hey Fret,

I dont' think our countries are so different :)

The kids over here couldn't spell to save their lives. I mean, lots of schools teach them to spell how it sounds ??? So they get into the habit of doing it wrong and stay with it.  When my kids were young, I went round the school to have a bust up with the teacher, but had the wind taken out of my sails when I was confronted by this gorgeous girl in her mid twenties. I stood no chance. Stood on my tongue many times on the way home ;D

As a footnote, I betcha my kids couldn't tell you who Nelson was either ;D     Isn't it typical of us British that we stick a statue of one of our nations greatest  miles up in the air to be crapped on by the pigeons. ;D

This is the whole problem. History is no longer treated as a serious subject at school. I believe it's not even on the syllabus at some. At others, WWII is regarded as ancient history & about as far back as they go. This doesn't make me feel too good as I was born during WWII. LOL

I reckon to know a fair amount about world history but most of this is what I made it my business to learn since leaving school. I'm still learning every day. ;)

Sorry, I went to public school

That would be a state school in the UK. Public School is what they call private schools over here. Old school tie & all that. Confusing ain't it?

I should know about the state of UK schools I'm still being taught in one. By the way we weren't taught about Nelson but I'm interested in military history so I do know who you mean.
