pretty simple really,
binary is really an 8 figure number, 11111111 being 255 and 00000000 being 0, now starting from the right, the values are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. so 011 is actually 0+2+1, or 3, as opposed to 10, which is 2+0
