Old 73' Ford F-100

What are you laughing at?

Old 73' Ford F-100

This is a true story, it was funny then and now so that is why I put it here. I tried to keep it as clean as possible and stick to it as it happened.
I wished I still had that truck, 4 speed with a granny low and had a 2 speed transfer case.
This happened 20 years ago or so. I had long hair back then, about half way down my back.
I was driving home after work and felt the front end on driver side drop, looked over and seen my front wheel leave me. I cracked the spindle off. I looked all over trying to replace that dang thing with no luck.
In the mean time I had a apprentice picking me up taking me to work, his name was Zack.
Well Friday rolls around I asked Zack if he could take me by the bank so I could cash my check, old habit of never depositing a contractors check into my checking account.
Anyhow Zack said he would, but had to run and take care of something else up the road and would be right back to pick me up. He drove a brown 80's VW bus camper special.
So after taking care of my business in the bank I am waiting for Zack to return in the easiest place for him to pick me up between the bank and a place called Gene's shoe hospital. and I was looking towards the setting sun and what was the back of the police dept at the time. A brown 80's VW bus camper special pulls up and I open the door and hop in the seat, but the door jamb hits me in the back as I am getting in. I position myself on the seat and reaching for the door handle, pull the door shut, the van still kind of bucking around.
I say.....What....the....f are you doing Zack and look over and see it is not Zack. It is some big hippy dude tie die shirt on full beard, dude is hopping along side the van on one foot. He'd hop on one foot and stab at the break with the other. I see this and just busted up laughing, I tried to give a sincere apology while laughing my butt off over a honest mistake. Dude was in pure embarrassed mode and could only mumble back a "f you man" response.
I got out of the mans van, and stood there waiting on the real Zack in a brown 80's VW bus camper special, I was in tears laughing so hard when he finally showed up.

I have never seen a F-100 with a two speed in it, I have seen a lot of two-speeds in 2 tons and up. We called them 4-5 speeds with a dog in it. I sure do wish I had one of those old 73 f-100 with a dog in it. The ones I have had a red button on the gear shift. When the button was down it was in low range and when it was up it was in high range. Are we talking about the same thing??? homeboy

This was basically a 3 speed transmission with a low 1st gear I hardly ever used, the transfer case was a old Dana 2 speed, can't remember which one it was now. But low locking it in 1st gear was way low, it would have crawled up any thing as long as it had some wheels touching the ground. Even the rear axle was a Dana 44. I wished I would have kept that truck now. Never did find a spindle for a 73' to replace the other one, ended up throwing a front axle from a 76' with disc brakes.

I get the picture now you had a 4 wheel drive with a high and low range in it. That makes perfect sense. Thanks Rick
