Alcohol and guns don't mix, ever! That's why the army is sober in combat, and off its face on leave ;-)

I guess I have been quite lucky as I have been around and using guns since I was about 12 years old and have never shot myself yet :D although I always have had respect for all weapons and what they can do, guess that I am the odd one here as a lot of people shoot themselves every year with guns that are not loaded. Never have been able to figure out how you kill yourself with an empty chamber :?: Oh yes....I really liked the link for the urbandictionary, very enlightening

I don't see it as an accident. This is stupidity, through and through.

I also don't see a negative aspect here.
Dum ass puts gun to head and pulls trigger. The world is a better place.

Let me ask people what has changed.

1959
My family moves to a medium-small town, 25 miles outside of New York City.

My best friend has a father who hunts, and he's proud of his rifles & shotguns.

He has them on open display in the den where we play.

We were both 9-10 years olds when we met.

NO ONE EVER TOUCHED THE GUNS.

EVER!

I have no idea where he kept the ammo, we didn't look.

Today
I wonder why people bring up their children to be dedicated to self indulgence and stupidity.

Dad should have been teaching the kids how to use the guns safely.

I got a BB gun when I was a little older than Ralphie and a .22 a couple of years after that.

I'm still alive many more years later because there are two basic rules of gun ownership:

Always assume a gun is loaded.

Never point a gun at anything you don't intend to kill.

In all the years that I've owned a rifle, I've never talked about it nor shown it to friends. But if was going to do so, for whatever reason, I would unload it in front of whoever first, then check the magazine to be sure there's nothing in the firing chamber, then point it at the ceiling, unlock the safety, and pull the trigger while pointing it upward. "OK, it's not loaded, here, take a look." That's actually what I do when I clean it, all steps to insure no accidents occur while I'm cleaning it.

Just common sense. And like Webb said, always assume it's loaded, and never point it unless you intend to use it.

Long ago, when we wuz little kids, one father broke out his .45 revolvers and closely supervised a shooting session. There we were, 8 years old or so, firing .45's that were like cannons to us. But he was super careful, held the guns in our hands until we were ready to fire, pointed them for us, and told us to just stay still after pulling the trigger and not re-point the gun. We only did this on one occasion, that father's wife wasn't too good with this, and the .45's were single action cowboy revolvers, sorta like antiques, the father didn't want to fire them too often. It was my first lesson in gun handling. We never bothered with guns again, simply because we didn't have any.

Those .45's are now in the possession of that father's son. I never saw again.

Hmm, remembered something here. Sorta reminds me of a story I read once in some small local newspaper, so no telling if true, but the story went, some guy had the habit of keeping a loaded handgun right by the phone on his nightstand, one night while he's sleeping the phone rings, and, well, he answered the gun instead.
