So Kermit the Frog moves to Ireland and was having a great time. Soon, however, he started to run low on money.

Being somewhat famous, he went to the bank for a loan.


Paddy, one of the load officers seemed agreeable, but asked Kermit what he had for collateral.

So Kermit reaches into a bag and pulls out an old family heirloom.

It was made of cut glass and quite sparkly, but rather hard to describe.


Mr. Whack carefully looks it over, but to him it simply looks like second hand junk store rubbish.

When he tells Kermit that the bank can't use that as collateral, Kermit asks if Mr. Whack would ask the bank manager, and Paddy does so.


After showing the "collateral" to the bank manager, the manager say -

"That's a nick-knack Paddy Whack, give the frog a loan."

Hadn't thought of that song in probably 60 some odd years......

Same here, it just popped into my head last week.

And then an Irish friend sent me a joke with the name Paddy in it.

1 + 1 = an old joke.

Okay -- the frog loses all four legs and evidently can't hear: he won't jump when told!
He'll have to stay in Eire while we all go rolling home...

What a coincidence!

It's amazing how many slight mods there are to that song. I bet that most of us (who do remember it anyway) remember it a little differently.

Origins and history

The origins of this song are obscure. The earliest extant record is a version noted in Anne Gilchrist's Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society (1937), learnt from her Welsh nurse in the 1870s under the title "Jack Jintle" with the lyrics:

My name is Jack Jintle, the eldest but one,
And I can play nick-nack upon my own thumb.
With my nick-nack and pad-lock and sing a fine song,
And all the fine ladies come dancing along.

My name is Jack Jintle, the eldest but two,
And I can play nick-nack upon my own shoe.
With my nick-nack, etc.

It may sound better in Welsh than English, but I think that I like the newer versions better.



My wife and I remember it slightly differently from each other too.


Looking at Pauls' reference to the song from Enchanted Learning I saw a jarring lack of rhyme in their attempt to avoid any reference to religion.


I'm not poking at you, Paul. This version wasn't your fault, I'm sure.


I may be only a bit more religious than my dogs, but I think that it can be a good thing for the most part.

And seeing a religious word doesn't turn me into an atheological zealot heck bent on wiping it from the face of the earth.

So I'll take that verse, that I remember too, from Wiki:

He played knick-knack up in heaven;

Give the dog a bone,

And am I the only one who thinks that this looks more like a sick rat than a dog?

The number "11" in the rhyme was the reference to that mythical place up in the sky.... ...!

Well, I don't know it it's true any more, but schools in England are/were better than the ones in the US.

Over here we stopped at 10.



On the other hand we might have stopped with 10 because we had already use 7/heaven, and couldn't think any thing to rhyme with 11.
