The doctor called me to his surgery and told me my wife will die soon if she keeps drinking.

"Why are you telling me and not her?" I asked.

"Because I've seen the way she nags you," he replied. "There's an off license round the corner."

I wondered that myself.

Off-License

A place (in the UK) where you can purchase alcoholic beverages for consumption "off the premises". As opposed to a Pub, Inn or Bar, which holds a license to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises. Often referred to as "the off'y" Many Pubs or Inns also sell alcohol for consumption off the premises too, but charge what they would have charged if it was sold piecemeal over the bar. (Then it would be called pricey or dear.)

Hehe, the Brits have funny names for things... there was another post where someone caused some confusion when they mentioned a "prop shaft"... those of us who aren't from a little rock in the North Atlantic call it a drive shaft.

If my foot was hanging out of the boot here in the U.S., folks would tell me to tie my foot-gear. If it was hanging out of the boot in Britain, the police would be pulling over the driver of the auto.. :auto-iroc: :banana-gotpics: .

As many times as I've watched Top Gear, I still can't help picturing flowery hats and sturdy footwear when they talk about "bonnets" and "boots".
