I wasn't far out. It's the Welland Canal in Canada. Read the full report HERE.

It was never proved but it seems the bridge operator might have been drunk.

Ontario, Canada. On the Welland Canal.

The ship was carrying 26,000 tons of grain. Can anyone say "momentum"?

The sign says Holland Road. I assume it's somewhere in the US. [smiley=tongue.gif]

Admittedly, I haven't seen all of the US, but I can't recall ever seeing or hearing of a bridge that opens like that. It could be in the US, I have no idea.... :-/

There is a bridge like that in GTA3 - A very american game  ;)

A write off. The Shipping line went bust too soon afterwards because that was 25% of their fleet.

Whats even more incredible though is that there was a man at the wheel throughout the collision.

There is a bridge like that in Duluth  Minnesota, but this isn't it just because of the surrounding area.  I thought it was that bridge at first though, especially since that ship resembles the great lake freighters up there.

Was.... because I don't have a camera, My binoculars fell apart (were like 10 year old hand me downs) I still live on the lakes (Lake michigan to be exact) and since I can't drive its not like I can go watch them whenever I want.... but I still keep up on shipping news and such.... if I get a digital camera soon (Which will happen probably) You will see some some shots in the photos department... However lay up season is approaching so it may not be until the spring. I need to get a know your ships 2007 and a camera.... my drivers licence (Just turned 16) and then I'll be good... back to spotting the old boats.

Cheers, Gunny (If theres anything about boats you want to know just ask)

It's a pretty common drawbridge design in the US... there are at least half a dozen of them within 5 miles of my place, spanning the Passaic and Hackensack rivers.

I agree with those who say the bridge operator was at fault... I can almost hear the ship's captain on the radio: "No, idiot- the other "up"!!!"

Depends.... because with airplanes you cant get close to em (up close and personal) But if you own a boat you can get within a few hundred yards of em.... So it can be better than plane spotting, also they have set routes etc and certain harbours have 15-20 boats a day... so it can be good... I've seen ships up close and personal when fishing on 1 ocassion and once on a small pleasure/Fishing boat (about 20 feet long) and twice on the SS badger oh and did I mention there are a few places where the boats get within 100 feet of shore? Its quite an interesting thing.... you just gotta do it I guess...

Many tell me I am crazy because I tell em I am a boat spotter, but isnt any spotting crazy? The SS. Badger is (if you don't know) The last of the many car ferries on lake michigan....

Cheers, Gunny
