;DOld family Story:

Way back in the early 1900's an ancestor of mine caught the flying bug and bought himself a Curtiss biplane. Soon after he taught his wife to fly and she took to it like a duck to water. Their neighbors were amazed since his attempts to teach her to drive an automobile had oft met with disaster. My ancestors response was that at 500 or so feet, there were no fences, livestock, or telegraph poles for her to run into!

I ran across this cartoon in a circa 1910 magazine. A lady is talking to a little bird on the sidewalk who has a suitcase by its side while overhead various early aircraft buzz around. The caption reads: "Fly south? Not me lady, it's not safe up there anymore!"
