I remember the collapse of Bay bridge, and all the motorists crushed beneath the upper and lower levels. A terrible sight!

Photos of Bay Bridge...>>> http://photos.mercurynews.com/2012/10/1 ... ame%20here

Not quite as big as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake... :o...!

Now THAT was a REALLY big one!

I collect lots of details of that one.

Paul.

P.S...Thanks for the reminder, BE... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...1

My parents were supposed to go there for their honeymoon but something came up that changed their plans... I guess the place they were going to go to was destroyed so if they had, I gone, I would not be here!

What with Earthquakes, Wild Fires, and Land slides, etc, Cal is an "interesting/fascinating" place to live!

I keep my little Cessna 150 well above the danger areas, (except the Vineyards!).. ;D...!

The following summer I was on holiday with my wife (then girlfriend) in San Francisco (Hotel Aunty). We were driving around the water front with a map on my wife's knee (well before satnav) trying to find the Embarcadero. We drove around the same roads three times before we realised that the Embarcadero was in fact the pile of rubble that we had been driving past for the last 45 minutes................... ;D

I was only 16 years old when it happened! two years later (1991, ironically 2 years and 2 days after the earthquake), there was a major fire in the City of Oakland!

Wikipedia link about the fire

Bing images of the fire

There are some images that are completely unrelated to the fire :-/

For some strange reason, Californians seem to love building houses amongst trees and undergrowth, and then wonder why their houses burn down every Wildfire Season!
I remember the disastrous wildfire around Lake Tahoe a few years ago, with all the houses built amongst the trees in the Forest!

Houses surrounded by trees are an impending disaster!

Paul.... 8-)...!

Every Fire Season I follow the CAL news, and take my Sim Cessna 150 to explore the affected scenes each time.

Unless building in the open range of the midwest or western desert, the only choice is to cut a clearing to build (in the northeast there are also some hefty rocks to remove prior to levelling the site); then one has the continual need to keep the area cut and trimmed; any area left to itself will be in tall grass within a year and reforested within 20 years (howbeit, with much smaller trees and shrubs).
