Depending on long and short scale, a billion is a trillion. Why can't they just make a single number that is what it is 

Usually I only ever work in numbers up to a few hundred billion (astrophysics is a large bit of science) and go down to a couple of femto. I miss the days of maths being '2+2' 

Even stranger is that one trillion of any small denomination would likely take over 100 years to mint.
