I still remember I had just finished teaching at the uni for the day and got back to the in-laws home when my friend sent me an SMS telling me there'd been an explosion in NY. I replied that it was probably a pipe bomb and had broken a window and scared an old lady (this is a typical belief of anyone who ever had anything to do with The Troubles).
Then I switched on the TV and sat down with my lower jaw in my lap.
I'll NEVER forget that day. I was trying to contact Dave (Fly2e) to make certain he and his clan were all okay and fretting like mad till I got a reply, it always amazes me how tight knit we are here and I'm glad for that. My friends on these forums are all special and I've had the pleasure of hanging out with some of the guys (just don't get Doug started on the Picadilly line episode!)
This was a moment that changed our perception of the world we lived in and was a wake-up call for all civilised people that evil is out there among us and inaction is the worst thing we can be guilty of.

I was in college at the time, at Louisiana Tech majoring in aviation.  A group of us aviation students had gotten out of our 8:00AM class early and were eating breakfast in the Student Center.  CNN was on and was covering the first aircraft strike, a lot of confusion and no real information.  As we were watching live, the second aircraft came into frame and struck.  You could have heard a pin drop in the student center, with several hundred students watching. 

Us aviation guys knew what we just saw, and all jumped up to get back to our department's building.  As we got there, we heard about the first tower collapse live on the radio.  The phone was also ringing like mad, as the FAA was calling to tell us to get all of our planes on the ground, or they would be shot down.  All made it back to our airport except for one, that was intercepted by an A-10 and forced to land at a small airport 15 miles away.  According to the guy flying it, the A-10 pilot pulled up on his wing, raised him on the radio, pointed down and told him to "put it down there or I will put you down there."  We never thought in a million years they could shut down the entire airspace system, but we were wrong...

As we were watching live, the second aircraft came into frame and struck

same was I ,I also was watching CNN in my country via cable ,I didn't even have a clue of what was happening ,when suddenly I saw the other fireball from behind the other tower on TV,I said What the ??
Like you said a lot of confusion like the pilots didn't knew where they were like lost or ,they didn't saw the buildings I ask my self How come they didn't see the building ? I could see was a clear day in NYC!

then half and hour later the same CNN show images of a country in the middle east (I don't remember which one ) a man giving candy to people and kids ,and people having on the streets some kind of a party ,celebrating ,I remember I was really furious and mad for that, because of that

I was in Okinawa, Japan as a young Private First Class.  They scrambled us out of the barracks at 2am telling us the Pentagon was bombed and America was under attack, we were in ThreatCon Delta, get ready to get on ship and roll out.  I was blowing holes in drawers like it was cool. 19 years old. 

Never thought I would be in a wartime military back then when I joined.  Everything was cool.  Figured i would do my 4 years, enjoy the uniform and then get out and find a job.  Then it got real. 

Took me 6 years after the attack to finally get into a warzone, by then I had made Sgt so I was in charge of a platoon when I got there.  Earned 2 medals out of it, and none of my crew were hurt over there.  Saw a lot more than I ever imagined I would when I first signed up.  Taught me a lot about life.

Out here in San Francisco, my current unit is participating in several memorials.  Flight 93 was due for San Fran before it was hijacked, and a lot of families out here lost loved ones.

I was in middle school, I had gotten to my second class of the day and one of my friends said he'd overheard one of the teachers saying a plane crashed into a building in NY.  We both thought they meant a small plane, not an airliner.  The principal pulled the whole school into the auditorium and told us what happened.  They sent everyone home, I remember watching the coverage on TV in a classroom waiting for parents, not really comprehending the gravity of the situation (I was 12).

I was on late shift carrying out a "C" check on an ATR72. Had to go to Maint Op's for something and saw the second aircraft live on the 24hour TV in the corner. I realised at that moment the world was going to be a different place and that aviation was going to change forever, not to mention my job security was also up for question. I have to say though after 10 years I am getting to be a bit 9/11 fatigued. Probably not a politcally correct statement, but it is how I feel. Probably, because I grew up with terrorism pretty much every day on the TV due to Northan Ireland and it's exports to the UK mainland. Later as a serviceman, I spent quiet a bit of the late 80's and early 90' having to look under my car before I drove anywhere. Even though I was stationed in Germany, we were "legitimate targets". Something that 10 or so servicemen found out at great cost. I only missed being morter bombed because I was at a party and over the limit to drive to a barraks I was using for transit accomodation. Terrorism today, is a fact of life. It is never going to go away, there will always be someone who will resort to violence to further their cause. Be it abortion clinic bombing to Al Qaida via the IRA, ironically the only way to combat the problem is to treat everyone as a terror suspect. You, me, wife, girlfriend, granny and grandad, we are all treated as potential suiside bombers every time we fly, enter a social event or gathering. Being frisked, metal detected and bag searched, the terrorist has won by ensuring we have lost our civil liberies, all he has had to do is send a few intercepted emails or phone calls. He can sit back feel smug that his God is better than our God.

I agree with everything you said about being 'fatigued' from it.  Especially with how everyone is now treated when trying to fly, and the absolutely disgusting remarks I've seen about various religions since 9/11, all because a select group of people chose to do a terrible thing.

I was recently thinking.........

After 70 years, we are still talking about Pearl Harbour, in the media etc.
Also most the info avalable is now completly honest about the circumstances leading up to it and who/what is to blame for not being more prepared, etc. for it .

However with 9/11, after ten years, there are those who are still trying to rewite history and cover their butts.
I hope the 9/11 history in the coming years will ultimately reflect the whole truth and resist those who would rewrite it falsely.

I was too young then to Know anything was happening but we were watching it on TV when the Second plane hit the second tower .
But on a slightly different note on August 8th 1998 the American Embassies of Tanzania And Kenya were Attacked in simultaneous truck bombs and I Wanted to post it here for the 13th Anniversary but I Didn't really think it would really matter here :-/ :-X.
But I'm really glad they got that Sick bastard
