When I left School in 1950, we were thrown out at the age of 16 to find a job in the real World....
I took on a 6 year apprenticeship as an Electrical Engineer, which included one day per week at a nearby Tech College (followed by a two year conscription in the British Army R.E.M.E), a job which lasted until I retired in 1984.
There was no further Schooling after the age of 16.
Many of my school friends became experienced Tradesmen immediately after they left School.
