NWS

[quote]Hurricane Irene now is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane with winds of about 115 mph when it draws near Florida on Thursday.

The good news: The projected path has been shifted to the east, keeping the core over the Bahamas and more than 150 miles off South Florida

I wish you luck. The only hurricane I've been in was hurricane Belle around late 1975 or early '76' when I was stationed at Cherry Point MCAS. It was an awesome experience to see

I'm not on the Gulf Coast, but close enough that major ones have caused a lot of damage here. I went through Camille, Frederick, and Katrina, as well as others,

but those three all caused significant damage, especially Katrina. Good luck.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

No hurricane hit while I was near the Gulf (no matter what you want to put to my charge}. I did survive one typhoon while stuck in the Pacific (well, above it but not by much). Squads were sent around knocking the potential coconut missiles from their branches.
They put me on charge of quarters at our remote site, about eight miles from the base. The power shack was separate from the operations vans; when the main power went out, I was unable to see in the pounding rain and ran until I smacked into the side of the shack, then felt around for the door. After starting the emergency generators, I ran back toward the vans (or so I thought) until my shin smacked into the front post of the step railing -- if I'd missed it I may have joined the suicidal WW2 Japanese at the bottom of the 600' cliff some ways beyond.
I was soaked when I returned to the base, quite well expecting to dry off and get some rest -- everything was damp and two inches of water covered the barracks floor.
Ah, and those were the days I thought I'd never miss...
:P

It has shifted a bit east, but now the Carolinas are in the center.  I do remember Hurricane Hugo, so good luck up there, be careful.   Even after it passes, we'll all be watching the news.

Oh boy, I'm not sure that hurricane is the only natural disaster going on over here on the east coast!  I just expeirienced a miniature earthquake over here!

Oh boy, just found out, it was centered in Louisa county and was a 5.8 on the richter scale.  And also, the center was right near a nuclear power plant!

Been keeping my eye on this hurricane, but it looks as if the gulf coast will be spared! Good luck to all the east coasters!
