Being in the construction field for many years I will give this one a try. The most common way rats enter house plumbing is through the roof plumbing vent, so step one is to secure those vents by putting a wire mesh over the openings. (securely)

Step two isn't easy but it should stop a rat in its tracks. Install a backflow preventer of the flap style in the verticle pipe under your toilet base. If its installed horizntally it won't be as effective.
Only a spring loaded flapper will work in the verticle pipe, and definately not one of the ball type preventers in a sewage pipe.

I love rats, though those were pet ones, and didn't go in the toilet (they did, however, love to paddle in the sink!)

Just give it a cuddle and send it on its way  ;D

;D We just had a spider in our toilet once and my girlfriend almost made it to the space station. That sort of tickly feeling at 3 AM.

A smaller version in my case, the mouse was flushed down the loo; most often, an unwelcome rodent will head for what seems the nearest escape route... if you see a tail disappearing down the sink/tub drain, run a few hundred gallons of hot water down all the drains...
Yeah, may seem cruel but I'd rather not a U-turn reappearance up another hole.

Beating a rat to death with the toilet brush would make a change from beating....................... :-X ;D

I once had a snake in the loo when living in Australia on the farm. My dad in a fit of brilliance shot it with a rifle and destroyed the toilet in the process! The nearest DIY shop was only a couple of hundred kilometers away ::)
To say my mum was cross would be a MASSIVE understatement. Remember children high velocity firearms and porcelain don't mix ;) ;D

Matt I grab the rat with a pliers from the tail and throw it in my yard against the concrete and kill it

I've spent a large amount of my life abroad Alex, we left the UK when I was four. I've spent 3 years in America, half a year in Canada, two years in Australia, nine years in Hungary, various Far and Middle East countries.
I've also been to almost every country in Europe and done North Africa.
South and Latin America are still to be entered in my passport ;)
