Anybody here good with guns?

Interesting topic for me to make, but please read on  ;D

As you may or may not know, I do photography from time to time. For a while now I have been interested in doing some 'Underworld' style photos. I know a model who reminds me of Kate Beckinsale, but I'm just working on the authentic aspects of said shoot.

Would anyone be able to help me to identify the handguns that Selene is holding in this photo here? (Yes I do own that poster, and yes, I do wake up to her on my wall every morning, and yes... I am proud of that fact!)

Am I right in thinking it's a Walther P99? This webpage has a complete collection of all the weapons within this film and it appears to be the most similar, but I thought it only came in black colours.

Furthermore, does anyone have any reccomendations on how to get replica weapons such as these, legally, within the UK? Pistols are banned weapons, a lot of airsoft pistols are banned (unless brightly coloured, usually). Two days ago the legal age to have a firearms license raised from 17 to 18 (in my region at least) so I am too young to hold a firearm, but I believe that covers ammo, shotguns and rifles. Should I just try and make the visible aspects of the gun myself out of wood or something like that? I only require slight portions of the firearm in view.

Cheers.

I would say that is a P99. Not many other handguns have that "angular" or "faceted" sort of design. The shell ejection port renders explanations such as; "Jericho 941" invalid.

P99s come in a few different colour variations. You can get all black, black slide with green polymer frame, silver/chrome slide with black frame, for example.

It's my favourite firearm, and probably the best 9x19 of all time. ;)

Yep, looks a lot like the P99.

As long as you keep the gun in your house/backyard I don't see any issues arising. Just don't be stupid with it.

Just keep them in your house or backyard? They should be in a metal shredder...

Yeah I thought it looked the most similar with the P99, I was a bit confused at first because there was a lot of lettering missing, but I realised they were in reverse as they were being held with the 'backs' of them faced forwards.

I mean, after reading through the local police firearms licensing page it concludes with the following:

"You may not have an air weapon or immitation firearm in a public place"

As for what is not banned:

"The ban does not apply to weapons that use CO2 bulb systems because CO2 bulbs do not contain a projectile and are not therefore completely self-contained."

I'm guessing that means that the airpistols you can get with the changeable cartridges may be allowed? There's a highstreet shop which sells air rifles and P99 immitations a few miles away.

Don't worry Carlo, I'm not looking at actual firearms. The only ones I have found at a reasonable price are spring loaded BB guns. Though not licensed myself, I have had weapon handling instructions and in the past have been signed off to fire a couple of actual rifles. I know the precautions that I must take to keep myself safe, and I know the checks to do to prevent accidents.

We've got more than enough "over here" as it is!

Too true Paul, do you get back to Lambeth much? Your hair would curl...

The other night I accidentally tuned into the; "Discovery Channel" on my Freeview box, to see the horrendous, North American (who else),

People being disgusted with guns disgusts me. I use guns for target shooting. Period. It's difficult to do and being able to do it brings great satisfaction, Killing and violence are not involved. Guns have more than one use. I own guns and I could not bring myself to kill another human being. Stop saying "I don't like guns" just so that you have something to say.

I'd have to agree.

I do think American laws are a little too loose for gun ownership, and UK laws could be more friendly towards target shooters...

...But at the end of the day it's always the person that commits an offense, not the gun. Just about any object could be used lethally.

But hey ho, we're all entitled to our own opinions. This thread isn't even about actual firearms in the first place! I want safe options!

What are laws like with regards to Airsoft replicas in the UK? There's an almost outright ban on replicas here in Australia (you need an actual gun licence to own one), and I *must* get an Airsoft P99 when I move to the UK...when I went to Japan, I found a store that had shelves lined with P99s, but bringing it through customs would have been nigh on impossible!

Holding my P99 up to this picture, it looks nothing like it. I would say it is an artists generic impression of a handgun that has several different "features" of several different guns. When you have an exact copy of a weapon in such a picture, you will end up with a lot of lawyers "discussing" advertising and other groups talking about promotion.

The laws are becoming much stricter. I think you have to be a registered member of an airsoft or skirmishing group, and over 18 to buy weapons. If they're replica weapons then usually they must be painted in bright 'stupid' colours and/or have clear plastic. So they should be bright pink or something like that on a certain percentage of the weapon.

The law doesn't seem to be too exact. There are a lot of exceptions if you know where to look, and lots of get arounds if you search for them.

Expat, is that a CP99 by chance? I'm starting to think that making my own wooden props would probably come out quicker than any legal battles or authenticity checks to make sure the shape is actually right. The CP99 is a common bad immitation... The general shape is there, but the breech and most of the finer details are quite a bit off.

Carlo, I understand how and why you feel the way you do. And any death is sad, especially when it could have been avoided. But, a gun is a simply a tool. Do you hate automobiles? According the the statistics, automobiles are the number one cause of accidental death in the U.S., while firearms is the last. The gun, and the automobile are not the responsible parties. The gun owner or person in possession are. Thus there is need of more training and restrictions on the ownership thereof, both firearms and automobiles. Obviously, there are people in the world that should not be allowed ownership of either.

Last chart on the page.
