Home-made Air Conditioners

Hey guys,

In my room, it's really freakin' hot because of my computer. The rest of the house is kept nicely cool by the AC unit, except for my room! lol

I was wondering if anyone knew if those cheap ($30-$40) home-made air conditioners actually worked a little or not. I'm not expecting it to cool my entire room, I'm just hoping to place it in front of my computer to use it for cooling.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Very ingenious... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

When its very hot I just sit, naked, in front of my computer, and wrap a damp towel around myself.....

Low cost Air Conditioning..... :-*..!

(If the front door-bell rings, make sure to put your trousers back on again).

Photo supplied upon request.

Paul.... ;)... ;)... ;D....!

I would think it easier and more effective to buy a small window air conditioner, or these days they even have some that can sit in the room.  At least instead of always have to make or buy ice.

I think the idea is, its for people who cant afford even the cheapest aircon unit. A quick search for one of those turn up $100 for cheapest.
This could be made for all of $30 if not less.
It's not Ideal admittedly, but it would work in a pinch. Cold water with ice in it should work for several hours as well.

Have you priced copper pipe lately?  There is a reason people are breaking into homes and ripping it out of the walls.

Apply a bit of logic and physics to it..

What you're trying to do, is take heat out of the room's air, and melt the ice with it. You can get it done more efficiently by just hanging bags of ice in front of the fan.

Not being able to afford the window unit is moot. You'll pay for it many times over by buying ice (or continuously counting on your freezer for the ice)..  The extra electricity, and wear on the freezer will total up to the difference in cost for the window unit, pretty quickly.

Get a large, new, bin (wheelie bin, or some large container)
Fill bucket with ice and water
Jump in.

If you're not cold enough, add some salt to the mix, sit back and chill

Clever, but it'd be cheaper in the long run to buy a used window unit at a garage sale or on Craigslist.
