Click on the first link provided for the thread were the smilie was first spawned. Seems it all started with this *
Now days the smilie puts the the writers intentions in more complete order.

Apparently there has been some confusion about elevators and such.  After
talking to Rudy, I have discovered that there is no mercury spill in any of
the Wean hall elevators.  Many people seem to have taken the notice about
the physics department seriously.

Maybe we should adopt a convention of putting a star (*) in the subject
field of any notice which is to be taken as a joke.

I find it impossible to write a piece of text now without including various smilies to illustrate my emotions...(Emoticon)....>>>

I'm with you on that one Paul. I have a sometimes dry thought process. The smilie always waters down and improves my intentions..
Choose your smilies carefully, That is how everyone reading your text is understanding your meaning!

As well as Forum Text, I find it very useful to include various Smilies in E-Mail Text (Outlook Express, etc), to friends and relations!.... :P.... ;D...!

Its also lots of fun... ;D...!

In typed Text correspondence, you have no way of detecting each others "Mood" during the process, and the inclusion of Smilies in defined locations within the Text helps considerably in conveying the "Texters" Mood!.... ::)....!

I love it!.... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]...!

Paul.... 8-)...!

I don't know why, but I read that whole thread. After that, I had the urge to reply to it. That's when I realized that the last post was made a year before I was born.  ;D

In the additional features in between the smileys and the "Post Message" button there are a few tick boxes, tick the one on the bottom "Check this if you'll be adding code (or don't like smilies)."

You can have regular text smileys:
