.....what you can find rummaging through your shed. Especially when you come across an old duffel bag you haven't seen for 35 years.

I can't for the life of me remember what type of wood this is.... :-[

I think it's either Mahogany or Teak.... :-/....I'm a sufferer of CRS syndrome anymore

This one cracked me up. Apparently the tribal wood carver felt that hooves were needed were they can't be seen normally....lol

I'd say mahogany.  I downloaded one pict and took a closer look.  I've done woodworking stuff in my day, so I kinda know my woods.  There's sample shots online, I'll take a look in a bit, like to see a teak sample for comparison.

Very cool sculpture.

Nice sample shots on gilmerwood.

See the teak shot in the samples above, compare it to the mahogany shot.

Sideline: mahogany is the preferred wood for guitar necks (all types of guitars), and the primary body material for many solid body guitars (some topped with maple).

I have a Dean Tonic (solid body electric) that has a one piece mahogany body, as opposed to cheaper guitars made with multiple pieces glued together. It sounds wonderful and I have always thought that is was because of the wood used. Mahogany is very dense or so I believe. It sounds good enough that when my first Tonic was stolen, I had to go out and buy another. ;)

As for that sculpture. I think what is most interesting about it is the position that the animal is in. BTW is that cow or a water-buffalo? Usually art involving animals has them standing tall in a strong or heroic position, this one just looks natural. I've also been thinking about the hooves on the underside. Maybe the artist put them there to help him figure out how to shape the hips and hind quarter areas.

It's an Asian Water Buffalo. This type of buffalo in common all over Asia. They're literally everywhere from Vietnam to Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. I got it from a Degar Montagnard tribesman. So I assume it was made by him.

My Dad brought lots of bits and bobs like that from his time in the York and Lancaster Regiment when stationed in India during the First World War.
Lots of Buddhas, and various ornaments made of wood, clay, and alabaster, etc, .....various weapons....

..and a complete Tiger skin rug!

My Children have them now.... :)...!

It looks like "red onion Mahogany" the perfect wood for models. I have been using it for over 30 years for some of my solid wood aircraft models...

Best I can do is chop wood and a bit of whittling. Even then the end result is not much more than a toothpick....lol.
