This is crazy. I mean the person(s) who did this is crazy. As The New York Governor said, it was an "amateurish" bomb.

The one thing that surprised me, though human stupidity should really be a given are the news crews showing the crowds that gathered at the barriers to check it all out. A car bomb as a general rule has a 300 metre cordon, but then add in all the glass that is in and around Times Square and that is the last pace I would want to be.

As for being an amateurish bomb, typical politician view of the picture. For a start it goads the bomber to double is effort. Even armatures beat the professionals from time to time.  What would be the definition of a professional bomber :-?

This was scary. Another reason why everyone not just here in the United States but all over the world must be aware of their surroundings and report anything that looks a slight bit suspicious.

Why don't they go for a visit to the London MET office about how to handle this kind of situations instead of doing the hollywood thing and risking both personell and bystanders...

Our Standard Operating Procedures dictated a 300 meter cordon from small explosive devices. The minimum distance increases drastically with the size of the explosive device. Doing route clearance, we weern't always able to maintain textbook safe distances.

I've been just over a kilometer from a truck bomb going off. We've talked to guys who got hit by a VBIED at Combat Outposts. I remember hearing about one guy who was thrown out of his cot, and another was doing pullups and got slammed into the wall.

I was sitting in my office in Al Taqqadum, Iraq when a dump truck detonated 2 miles out in town.  My office door was blown open by the shock wave.  VBIED's are very powerful.

Times have changed then. Back in my service time it was 100 metres for an IED and 300 metres for a car bomb. I would say your generation have it about right. But then we (the UK) were at the receiving end of the IRA and although very, very good at what they did, even they were particular in how they targeted things unlike what you have to deal with, a loaded truck driven in the general direction of the target so to speak.

That has probably a lot to do with the materials used (C4 versus ANFO filled dumptrucks and rigged HE artillery shells) and the dirty tactics (usually a second vehicle close to make a bigger mess with a much heavier load)

Put simply....

We have so-called; "Naturalised British Citizens", originating from "other countries" who are more than willing to blow us to Kingdom come at any opportunity....which they do.

The exact same thing happens in the U.S.A.
