Is this even possible?

Postby CaptainCub » Mon May 03, 2010 11:29 am

Was watching an old episode of "McMillan and wife over the weekend, and in one scene a Mob informant is being flown to San Francisco aboard a Piper Twin Commanche when a Piper Arrow full of Mob Goons comes up alongside. One of the goons points a machine gun out a window and opens up on the Commanche from about 30 yards away. The Commanche evades and a sort of dogfight ensues until the Arrow gets alongside again and manages to shoot the pilot of the Commanche.
Two things bother me; one, I would think a twin Commanche would be able to outrun a Arrow, and two, I have my doubts about the gunman being able to score on a right angle shot. It seems the target aircraft would not be in the space he was aiming at once the bullets arrived, what do the rest of you think? :-?

I suspect its a fictitious NBC TV Crime Drama, to be taken with a pinch of salt... ;)...

Its all in the imagination of the watcher!... ;D...!

That's how they did it in the beginning of WWI, and how bombers defended themselves in WWII, so it's certainly possible. Speed is all relative. If he pulled alongside, matched speed, then it would be just like shooting at a stationary target. Also, he could just lead the target. Whether it's practical or not is another story. Seems simpler to just wait until they were on the ground.

A single engine Commanche would.
