Yes, someone is, but I'm having trouble remembering who atm.

*EDIT*
"On January 22, 2009, it was reported that the development team behind the franchise was being heavily affected by Microsoft's ongoing job cuts, with indications that the entire Microsoft Flight Simulator team was laid off. Microsoft confirmed the closure of the ACES studio on January 26, 2009 in a post on the official FSInsider Web site. The article, "About the Aces Team," states in part:

This difficult decision was made to align Microsoft

There seem to be veiled allusions to 'something coming in 2011' on the ORBX forum but perhaps that's just my interpretation.

FS addon creator/publisher "Aerosoft" is currently in the initial stages of developing an independent flight simulator. Check their forums for details.

That would be nice, Aerosoft makes terrific products.

Good evening all... :)

Just a thought and only a thought.

Why do we not take it on.

I can not say anything about other forums because this is the only one I use and belong to.

But...oh don't you hate "Buts"?

Who better?

Look at the membership numbers...how many of these folks would like to join the ranks of real aviators?

Perhaps stock or something along that line depending on what Pete thinks could be sold.

A Simviation flight simulator? That would be great, there are scenery designers here and aircraft designers, probably some people who know enough about programming to make such a program. It would certainly be cool, but I don't know. I don't mean to be a nay-sayer, but starting a company is risky business, especially in today's economy. On the other hand history shows that sometimes the most success comes when it is not expected to.

Doug has some interesting but extremely ambitious ideas. I think any of that feedback should go straight to the Aerosoft project. They have the ideas rolling, they appear to have good funding (or so they say that the multimillion budget isn't a problem) and there's a huge community. SimV may have the talent, but it still takes a lot of effort. Just remember that you can't wish for an idea to turn into code, it has to be typed manually, tried, tested and played around with.

If anyone is able to make a square kilometre with a single airport and some weather... You basically have created the entire engine right there and it just needs to be made larger. But such a 'small' task is never quite that easy.

You are right machineman9 but what a better way to get in on the ground floor. Perhaps a partnership of some sort.

I am not sure how it would work but the more I think about it the better I like the idea.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

I like the idea machineman9 has. Yeah, really all we need is that to be the engine, and then the talented members here can help it evolve. Simple.

NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!  ;D  :'(

I'll believe it when I see it.  ::)

Well that's usually all that an engine is. You have one (or maybe two, if the two need to be 'connected' so that the game can be continuous) of the essential components and then you just build it up because in theory it should all just expand. You demonstrate a tiny aspect working but that shows all the key areas of the game and then you simply make it bigger.

In terms of being optimistic, the hit game Gears of War had a $10M budget, took about 20-30 people and a few years to make. So it is possible to have not a lot of people to help make it, but the engine they used for that game already existed. To us, that would be like taking the MSFS engine and 'upgrading it'. To build an entire engine for the game would take quite a long time.

Personally I'm against the whole opposition thing as a few groups seem to be trying to make their own flight simulators. A merge of ideas as you said, Doug, does seem like a good idea. We have some great developers here... The least they could do, if they wanted to be a part of it, is help voice their views of what they want in a 'new game'. Instead of having lots of small games by dozens of groups, it seems to me like it would be better to have a much larger single game with collective thoughts from everyone else.

I, like a lot of others, like the idea of a new game, but I don't have a huge input on it. I'm not a developer, I am a shoddy programmer (and have since stopped that as it was getting me no where) but I do have my ideas of what I would like to see.

The whole "why don't we do it ourselves" idea, is the whole reason Pete brought FlightGear on board, because that is exactly what it is, a community built flight sim.  Not the greatest one around, but, it does prove the idea is possible.

It was hoped, that the community here would pick it up, and make it into something great.  Maybe that was too lofty of a goal?  It's hard to set out on something new, when most are satisfied with what's available, and mostly figured out.

If it was possible to use their free, and open source game engine to produce a fantastic sim, I'm sure someone would have tried it by now. So I'm guessing that means it's a hell of lot harder than it sounds.

The other issue, is the fact that A LOT of people won't touch something that hasn't got a brand name, or big reputation behind it.

example: If I tell you that two new simulators were released yesterday, one by Aerosoft, and one by a group of long time FS freeware designers that no one's ever heard of, which would you be more likely to try first? Would you even look at the other one?

Not knocking on Aerosoft, just using them as the example, since they are the only ones willing to publicly carry the FS banner into the future at this moment.
