Get out of jury duty?

Postby TacitBlue » Sun Feb 28, 2010 9:27 pm

I have jury duty tomorrow. How can I get out of it? How can I guarantee that I will not be selected to serve on the jury? I've considered a few options. I could make myself appear to be crazy, it's not that big of a stretch really. A little twitching now and then and talking to myself might just do it. What do you guys suggest?

Hmm. Well I've heard saying your friends/related to a cop works a lot, but you should have proof to back that up. Usually they don't like that as they think you'll be biased against the defendant.

Just a thought...but is it not your civic duty to serve as a juror?

I found it quite a learning experience.

If you really do not want to do it, well here all one does is fill out a form saying with proof they are either:
-military or military reserve
-emergency measures (police, fire, ambulance)
-volunteer fireperson

And that releases them from jury duty.

I would suggest try serving on a jury you might find it very enlightening.

The trick is to get out of jury duty before you ever set foot in the courthouse.

Check your jury pool number. Usually about 70 or so perspective jurors are in the courtroom at one time. The first 12 jurors are generally picked by number 36.

The last time I had to go to jury duty my number was in the high 60s. Didn't get picked that time.

As Flying Trucker pointed out, jury duty is a learning/enlightening experience. I have done it myself.

We don't have jury duty here in Holland but if we did I would dress up like Bozo the Clown and go for it. Walk in spraying water from the flower in your jacket. See how long it would take to get kicked out of the courthouse...

You could always pretend to be racist.  That or walk in without pants.  That works too! ;D

I'm 67, retired & never been called for jury service. I wouldn't object to doing it at all.  I find this rather odd when so many younger people with jobs find it inconvenient & difficult to spare the time, especially if it's likely to be a long trial. I can't help thinking there's a big untapped resource of grey-haired old gits like me with a long experience of life who could be very useful for public service like this. I'm surprised the authorities haven't figured that one out yet.

Perhaps I shouldn't have said that. The letter is probably in the post as I type. :D

.......^^^^^^.....

...... ;D....!

I suppose its fine for someone who is keen and enthusiastic about performing Jury Duty....

...but for someone who isn't?.... ::)...!

Paul...I don't expect a letter any time soon... ;)...!

Getting called for Jury Duty now, for me, would be like being forced back to work again!......9 'till 5... :o.... :o...!
I hate being disturbed from my usual routine of doing very little... from 9 'till 5... ;D...!

I didn't say I'm keen & enthusiastic about it. Just that I wouldn't object. :P

The toe-rag criminals would have to watch out if I & other grey-haired old gits were on the jury. Off with their heads! >:(

Hi all, thanks for the replies. ;D

Honestly, I just thought that this would make for funny conversation. It's true, I don't want to do it, but like Trucker said it is my civic duty. It's my day off anyway, so it's really not that inconvenient. If I end up having to serve on a jury then I will try to look at it as a learning experience.

"...walk in without pants", LMAO! ;D

...performing my "Civic Duty" has the same effect on me as "Behaving myself"....

I would rather not do either!... [smiley=evil.gif]..!

(The snag with Jury Duty is that a Trial can go on for years....every day, and wear you down!... :o...).

Paul...Misbehaving...in a Civic sort of way.... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]... ;D....!

..I am now an expert at "getting out of" most things I don't want to do!...(Years of practice)... ;)....!

That is what I'm afraid of! I don't want to be stuck on the next OJ Simpson trial.

Well, it's about time to go. If you guys don't hear from me for a while, then that's what happened. :-[

...either that or they've locked me up for walking around the courthouse with no pants. :P

He said it's not your civic duty, and I agree... but I also agree with his assertion that it might be enlightening.
I've been called up twice, and was rejected both times apparently because I'd been mugged (and it was reported to the police).
