What would happen if computers went away?

Postby Daycab » Thu Sep 24, 2009 12:17 pm

It's odd that in such a short period (40 years?) that our world has become so dependent on computers.

All countries using them would be the new 3rd world, while those who did not have them would be our new benefactors, teaching us how to live again.

Mountain men, survivalists, and those born before computers within the affected countries are immune to this outcome, as they probably wouldn't get the news that it has happened, for a while.

Nothing will happen. Although the biggest part of the world rely heavily on the use of computers and the internet, another big part has no or limited access to computers. Yet life goes on there too. And they also get things done. Maybe even more efficient then we do. People will have to adapt to it (OMG I can't use Twitter  ::)), it will take some time to revert back to 'old' techniques but it in the end life will find a way.

Crash ;) (remembers the time without mobile phone and internet. Ten years ago...)

I sometimes wonder about that myself. I think that life would be a lot less complicated if the blasted things had never been invented.

Younger people brought up with them might not agree & some would be helpless without them. I'm thinking specifically of the typical shop assistant that can't figure out how I can have the correct amount of cash ready for my purchases before they've rung it up on their all-singing-and-dancing computerised tills. ::)

I grew up in a time when children went outside to play. You rarely saw overweight children or adults.

Now with darn near everyone parked on their butts in front of a computer. You hear about the obesity crisis in children, young adults, adults and the elderly. I grant you, some can't help it due to disabilities due to various factors.

I only use my computer a few times a day. It's turned off 85% of the day. I flat refuse to "Twitter" and rarely ever look at my facebook page. I originally signed up to facebook at the urging of my kids that never have the time to check their facebook accounts..... ::)

The credit card reader broke at the restaurant we were at last night, and they had to stop taking credit card orders because no one knew how to use the older mechanical swiper.  ::)

Computers as in a desktop computer or computers as in anything that is a computer? Phones, consoles, bits in other electronics?

If the first happened, then a lot of people would struggle and I reckon a lot of companies would lose their money. But over time we would rely on old methods.

If the second bit happened, then we'd have a right problem on our hands. A lot of aircraft would not work, modern cars wouldn't work. We would have to heavily rely on old methods and I think it would take some time to adjust.

In either case I don't think the world would end, but become an inconvenience.

There are still plenty of us who have embraced (to some extent) the microprocessor and all its spawn, but still remember how to live well with nothing more advanced than an IBM ball-head electric typewriter. We're not all dead... yet. ;D

Well for one thing I wouldn't miss that, but I will go thru flightsim withdrawl, about the only thing I really depend upon my computer for. Guess I 'd go back to the good ol days of those wooden gliders with the rubber band powered prop, yeap nutin like buzzing the crowd with one of them babies! ;D ;D

What would happen if every computer, down to smallest microprocessor simultaneously died for good?

Dude, we would be so screwed....! :o

Think about it. The economy would take a huge hit. People would freak out as the country's infrastructure failed.
