'Moon Rock' in Dutch Museum Is Just Petrified Wood
Conspiracy theorists rejoice: Prized 'moon rock' in Dutch national museum is a fake

It's not green cheese, but it might as well be.

The Dutch national museum said Thursday that one of its prized possessions, a rock supposedly brought back from the moon by U.S. astronauts, is just a piece of petrified wood.

Rijksmuseum spokeswoman Xandra van Gelder, who oversaw the investigation that proved the piece was a fake, said the museum will keep it anyway as a curiosity.

"It's a good story, with some questions that are still unanswered," she said. "We can laugh about it."

The museum acquired the rock after the death of former Prime Minister Willem Drees in 1988. Drees received it as a private gift on Oct. 9, 1969 from then-U.S. ambassador J. William Middendorf during a visit by the three Apollo 11 astronauts, part of their "Giant Leap" goodwill tour after the first moon landing.

Hehe. I still think the 1969 landings were genuine though!

Love it... ;D...!

"....in 1988. Drees received it as a private gift on Oct. 9, 1969 from then-U.S. ambassador J. William Middendorf...."

I would gather from that, that U.S. ambassador J. William Middendorf was probable not on the best of terms with Prime Minister Willem Drees at the time...;)...!

Paul.... ;D... ;D... ;D...!

Heavens! We're looking for signs of life on Mars when extraterrestrial life has already Mooned us!
Well, Hagar, in a post (somewhat) long ago, yet (evidently) not so far away, we aptly stated the fortune of rescuing you from starvation on your now cheese-barren lunar home. Fortunate in that it did not come to bear, we did not acknowledge the imposed danger to you in the venture. This moon rock revelation is staggering -- not only was there life on the Moon... nor was it just scared to death... it was petrified in fear at our arrival!

Wouldn't it be interesting if it actually DID come from the moon?  Consider:

An asteroid large enough to create the Gulf of Mexico once crashed to earth.  Is it possible that the debris thrown clear of the massive impact was fast enough to escape the Earth's gravity?  If so, the possibility of it impacting on the lunar surface is fairly good.  And even though Luna's surface doesn't change very quickly, there have been numerous impacts on IT's surface since that time that would at least bury the bits of rock that came from Earth in a thin layer of moon dust, disguising it's Earth origins.

I'd say "Plausible".
