Earth could collide with Mars

Interesting article circulating its way around the web. If human life is still around in the time it is suggesting it will happen, it would be extremely fascinating to see, although the contents of my bowels would release itself 10 times over in about 3 seconds :o

"A wobble in the precise clockwork of the solar system could see the Earth collide with Mercury, Mars or Venus, scientists have predicted.
But they say reassuringly that such a mishap is unlikely to occur for billions of years.

The orbits of the planets are not completely stable because of the gravitational interplay between them. Over time, the system can become increasingly disordered - like a poorly balanced tyre that eventually tears itself off the axle of a moving car.

In a similar way, planets can end up being flung out into space, diving into their parent star, or smashing into each other.

Two French scientists have now calculated the chances of our solar system falling apart within the Sun's remaining lifespan of about five billion years. They found that while the "gas giants" - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune - are pretty stable, smaller rocky planets - including the Earth - are on a far less solid footing.

Computer simulations of 2,501 scenarios uncovered around 25, or 1%, which led to a disruption of Mercury's orbit and potential interplanetary collisions. In one case, all the terrestrial planets were destabilised, raising the possibility of Mercury, Mars or Venus smashing into the Earth. Another scenario saw Mars and the Earth approaching to within just 794 kilometres of each other.

"Such a close approach would be disastrous for life on the Earth, with a possible tidal disruption of Mars and subsequent multiple impacts on earth," Dr Jacques Laskar and Mickael Gastineau, from the Paris Observatory, wrote in the journal Nature.

Slight adjustments of the Mars near-miss produced five outcomes with Mars being ejected from the solar system and another 196 which included a collision. In 48 of these, the Earth ends up crashing into Mars or Venus.

In an accompanying News & Views article, Dr Gregory Laughlin, from the University of California at Santa Cruz, said there were implications for planet populations around stars other than the Sun.

He wrote: "With 99% certainty, we can rely on the clockwork of the celestial rhythm - but with the remaining 1% we are afforded a vicarious thrill of danger. What now remains is to understand the extent to which the hand of dynamical chaos that so lightly touches our solar system has moulded the galactic planetary census."

I predict this is what will happen on Dec. 23, 2012....

Whether the world will end or whether it won't end on any given date, doesn't make a bit of difference one way or the other. There is nothing that can be done about it, so why worry. All the worry in the world will not change the outcome of anything.

If I knew for certain the world will end on any given date. All I would do is cuddle with my wife and hold on for dear life until the end. Then we'd see what's next.... ;)

I'm sure that when there are several bodies of mass, all gravitationally linked.. EVENTUALLY two or more will collide..

But ponder this..

If we shrunk the solar system ALL the way down until Earth was the size of a golfball.. it would still be nearly a 1/4 mile from the Sun.. and Pluto would be some TEN miles away, and smaller than

Both dates are correct. Depends on which way the Mayan calender is calculated to ours...

Quite Rom. All the predicted dates could be a bit out, I am more concerned that North Korea will do the solar systems work for it a lot sooner ;D

No, on that date scientists think there is a chance of Earth's poles shifting and causing all kinds of disaster.

Interesting read, especially for an astro-physics nerd like me.  ;)

;D ;D It doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's an interesting read. Whenever I read something like this, I always like to imagine what it would be like to see for my own eyes. Would be fascinating...up to a point  ;)

Forget colliding planets I want to hang around for another 60 years to see what happens with global warming,no oil,no water and overpopulation.

I want to see the much vaunted 'science will save us' theory in action.

And as for why the Mayan calendar stopped when it did,I firmly believe it was more:

"Xactlatl!! Leave that damn thing now!! We'll be late for the sacrifice and I wish you would spend more time with your sons showing them how to cut hearts out properly."

I'll tell you what...

I'm not holding my breath for the next Billion-or-so years to see if it happens...

...trust me...;)...!

Day-to-day, I worry more about a Pigeon/Sea Gull crapping on my head from the space above me!.... :o...!

Paul... ;D...!

By 2000 everyone would have a watch run by a nuclear power source :)
