Times have changed

Postby Romulus111VADT » Fri May 08, 2009 1:44 pm

I'm a former smoker, so when I saw this ad while researching articles for genealogies. I about freaked out at what was paid once for something that cost so much today.

Image

Commodity costs in 1919

Gallon of gas $ .07
Loaf of Bread $ .03
Quart of Milk $ .03

The average starting salary for a college graduate in 1919 was $750 per year, or $14.42 per week.

What could be bought for $20 today is about the same as you could buy with $1.00 back in 1919.

Just inflation and a lot more tax I guess.

It's not only times that have changed. Imagine an ad like that now.

In the end it's all relative. I think most things are actually far cheaper today than they were in 1919.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

I know I'm probably going to regret asking Paul...
So don't ask Paul. :D
but why were the Colonies pink?
Because of the motherland's taxes... especially revolting in North America.

Compare the 1919 price of cigarettes to the gallon of gas I bought yesterday:

1 gallon of gasoline = 0.39 packs of cigarettes

Gasoline $2.19/gallon (a known value)

Cigarettes should be $5.62 a pack.

Of course state taxes vary wildly for both gasoline and cigarettes.

I know I'm probably going to regret asking Paul, but
why were the Colonies pink? :-?

When Paul & I were at school the British Empire was coloured pink on the world map.
