Seven people in U.S. hit by strange new swine flu.

WASHINGTON, April 23 (Reuters) - Seven people have been diagnosed with a strange and unusual new kind of swine flu in California and Texas, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursday.

All seven people have recovered but the virus itself is a never-before-seen mixture of viruses typical among pigs, birds and humans, the CDC said.

"We are likely to find more cases," the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat told a telephone briefing. "We don't think this is time for major concern around the country."

The CDC reported the new strain of swine flu on Tuesday in two boys from California's two southernmost counties.

Now, five more cases have been seen -- all found via normal surveillance for seasonal influenza. None of the patients, whose symptoms closely resembled seasonal flu, had any direct contact with pigs.

"We believe at this point that human-to-human spread is occurring," Schuchat said. "That's unusual. We don't know yet how widely it is spreading ... We are also working with international partners to understand what is occurring in other parts of the world."

Two of the new cases were among 16-year-olds at the same school in San Antonio "and there's a father-daughter pair in California," Schuchat said. One of the boys whose cases was reported on Tuesday had flown to Dallas but the CDC has found no links to the other Texas cases.

STRANGE MIXTURE

Unusually, said the CDC's Nancy Cox, the viruses all appear to carry genes from swine flu, avian flu and human flu viruses from North America, Europe and Asia.

"We haven't seen this strain before, but we hadn't been looking as intensively as we have," Schuchat said. "It's very possible that this is something new that hasn't been happening before."

Surveillance for and scrutiny of influenza has been stepped up since 2003, when highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza reappeared in Asia. Experts fear this strain, or another strain, could spark a pandemic that could kill millions.

H5N1 currently only rarely infects people but has killed 257 out of 421 infected in 15 countries since 2003, according to the World Health Organization.

The influenza strain is an H1N1, the same family as one of the seasonal flu viruses now circulating. Now that the normal influenza season is waning, it may be easier to spot cases of the new swine flu, Schuchat said.

Only one of the seven cases was sick enough to be hospitalized and all have recovered, Schuchat said.

"This isn't something that a person could detect at home," she said. The new cases appear to have somewhat more vomiting and diarrhea than is usually seen in flu, which mostly causes coughing, fever, sore throat and muscle aches.

The CDC is asking doctors to think about the possibility of swine flu when patients appear with these symptoms, to take a sample and send it to state health officials or the CDC for testing.

Cox said the CDC is already preparing a vaccine against the new strain, just in case. "This is standard operating procedure," Cox said.

Yay, another reason for the government to force us to take additional vaccinations*.... :-?

* I'm stilll convinced that the flu season is a result of everyone getting the flu shot.

It's mandatory for us in the DoD...we get the nasal spray now, not the shot, guess they figure we get enough needle sticks a year.

Amazing that the same flu that killed 16 in Mexico would only hospitalize 1 of the 12 cases in the US. Shows the difference in medical care.

I for one belive the only reason they push flu shots is extra money the drug companys take out of peoples pockets every year, plus I don't trust them when it comes to having someTHING injected into my body. And with the way things are going in this world, I belive one day there going to screw up the formula and kill 1,000's of people! Case in piont; 21 polo horses where killed because the socalled vitamin suplament that they were given was mixed wrong, just a matter of time before humans die because because of a F&@$up in pharmacticals!

We had the nasal spray last year, but I happened to have a really bad head cold, so I immediately went to the bathroom and blew my nose. Luckily, I didn't get the flu that time. One of my buddies who got it wasn't so lucky. The technician messed up, and the vaccination dripped down into his mouth. Guess what? He was very sick the next morning.

I got the flew shot in Ramadi back in 07 and had the flu for a few days. Not fun. This year, we got the flu shot, and I told them it would make me sick....but they didn't listen. Sure enough, within a week I was puking my guts out.. >:(

So I got the flu shot, to give me the flu, so I wouldn't get it? Where's the logic in that? People keep telling me its a dead virus and is impossible to get the flu from the flu shot, but I beg to differ ::)

But it is funny how the flu season begins when the government starts pushing the flu shot, and ends after they stop pushing it. As more and more people get the flu shot in the fall and winter, more and more people get the flu. Why does it seem like i'm the only person to see it...? ;D

That's what vaccines are. They give you a watered down virus, so that your immune system can identify it and stop it. Then, when you get the real thing, your immune system fight it off.

When I was in the Millitary back in the 80's, The only time I got vacinated was when I was being sent to some Godforsaken part of the world. It seems to me this "get a flu shot every year" started in /around 1994. I was working at a concret production plant for two years (started 1992), and no mention of the flu, than all of a sudden, this get your flu shot thing started, and if you refused the shot, you had to sign a waver that if you got the flu and couldn't work you wouldn't get sick pay cause the company offered you the flu shot for free. I didn't buy into it, and refused the shot!

Maybe in theory....

But I know way too many people who get the flu right after getting the flu shot.

I consider myself a healthy person, and rarely get sick, or get the flu. i've only had the flu a few times in the past decade, but now I get the flu with my annual flu shot.

I would rather take my chances without the shot and probably not get the flu at all, instead of take the flu shot and have the flu within a week. ::)

That is the flu shot proving it works, I suppose.

As said, it is a watered down and weaker version. So if you get the flu from that, imagine how bad it could be to have the tough and real version.

Atleast if you do get the flu from the shot you know your body is working to make yourself immune to it.

I get cold like symptoms from the shot for a couple days and that's it, just the body's reaction to the dead virus, sending in the immune system, which causes you to feel sick by swelling glands and getting some aches and pains....when I see people with the full blown flu I am happy I had the shot  ;D
