Urban legends reference page

Certainly 3.65 billion barrels of recoverable oil is nothing to sneeze at, but a little perspective is in order. The U.S. currently imports an average of about 10 million barrels of oil per day (for a total of about 3.65 billion barrels of oil per year), so even if all the estimated undiscovered oil in the Bakken formation were extracted today, it would only be enough to wean the U.S. off of crude oil imports for one year. That's still a good thing, but it's not nearly "enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 41 years straight" as claimed above.

yeah the number in the article is the amount that is reclaimable and I believe the huge number is that of the entire amount there.
Still its better than buying it from another nation.
also I think your a little off on the amount of oil used as the number for the year of 2007 was 7,548 million barrels

hate to double post but the number above in article takes in to account the oil shale found in the area which if heated will produce roughly 500billion barrels

I don't think we should go down that road, not everyone may agree with that statement.  ::) ::)

US energy policy has always reminded me of a miser.

We're sitting on tons of oil - in Alaska, offshore and now in North Dakota - and the politicians won't let anyone touch it.  Because, you know, we might need it some day.

50 years from now, after we've been held hostage by every third world country that can drill a well, it will be worthless.  Everyone will have a "Back to the Future" fusion powered car.

But we'll still have our precious oil sitting in the ground.

That is why Simv has had a zero tolerance for politics in the forums policy in effect for years.  ;)  As long as the politics stay out of thread, it will remain open...
but you know what happens when you cross the line...  :)

Alaska is one of the few untouched, beautiful places left in the US without some family of 4.5 romping around with every possession they own in an SUV with DVD players in the headrests, taking guided tours and delightfully leaving polyurethane evidence they were there for everyone else.  God forbid if industry were allowed to tap what meager resources there were they'd

pollute and poison everything within a 100 mile radius and then wiggling out of the responsibility for it.

Lord knows companies always get away with this kind of stuff.  Destroy an ecosystem, and pay some silly eco-credit as compensation or whatever harebrained scheme they get.  It's all money.  Costs and benefits.  Personally, I say the last bastion of American nature is too high a cost for a drop of oil.

There are only two things that will remove dependence on foreign oil

1. The entire system must be redesigned to not include fossil fuels in it.. that includes plastics, steel, and dish soap all of which require petroleum products in order to be produced

2. When it runs out over there and we pop up and say.. "oh my.. look what we have been hiding for 100 years"

LOL
