Hi there, as Im travelling to NYC in May Im looking for a reasonably priced place to stay. Doesnt necessarily need to be in Manhatten; Jersey City or similar are OK too (as long it doesnt take you hours to get to the center). Thanx in advance for advices!

Do NOT stay at the Palace Hotel in North Bergen. They fleeced my credit card for $2500 that took several months to get back. Rude and dirty just about covers it. I booked online via a hotel reservation website. The website for the hotel looked good, but that is about it. Check

While I can't tell you where to stay, I [glow=yellow,2,300]highly suggest[/glow] you watch Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations: Disappearing Manhattan....

First Pt. (links to following pts. can be found on the page. 5 parts in total I think).

Also this site should help you avoid all of the tourist, fanny-packet crap...Also has hotels, restaurants, and things to see...

I'd put you up here in Newark, but there's not much room at the moment.
In general I would avoid any motel on Rte 1&9 from North Bergen down...any place with hourly rates is not a good thing. ;D

There's nothing cheap in Manhattan, although a hostel might be the answer.

If you have time, take a train from Manhattan to  Somerville, NJ when we're flying at 47N and we'll pick you up and stick you in the glider. ;D

You could always spend a few nights in Newark Penn Station. :)

My suggestion would be to find a place within Brooklyn or Queens, cause that's where the 2 Main airports are located and there are alot of hotel/motels that compete with each other for buisness. Finding a place in Manhatten would most likely be the most expensive, the Bronx, I couldn't tell you, and as you stated above, if You want to get around real easy NYC has got the best transit system going. Depending on how long you are going to stay, you can buy a transit pass for a week/month/ect. and ride any bus or subway and you'll be always within 3-5 blocks of any place you want to go. The average traveling time to get any were is 30 minutes. Bewary of taxis, they are not cheap even to go a few miles, and if you get a slezzball one the'll rob you good, [glow=yellow,2,300]Especially the ones at the airport waiting for tourist who don't have a clue to were they are going[/glow], so in case you need to take a taxi from the airport to where you are going to be staying, have a map printed out so you'll have a general knowledge of the miles, and an idea of knowing where you are at so you don't get taken for a ride as they say. Other than that, get yourself a chain wallet, stay sharp, and have a great time ;)

i would stay around Dukes, if your coming in through Francis intl, or even Algonquin itself, if you can find a cheap enough place... i wouldn't suggest Hove Beach, as it seems to be filled with russian gangsters... Bohan also is inadvisable due to the high level of people that believe 'the streets' are alive in some way...

just beware of serial killers trying to steal your car, i would suggest you drop around Montauk ave. and pick yourself up a rocket launcher or something  ;)

(sorry, i just had to  ;D )

Cheers

Thank you very much for your suggestions! Meanwhile, I already have another question: how safe is NYC? Is it ok to walk on the streets at night in manhattan? In Brooklyn? Any no-go-areas?

@Rotty: Oh yes, sounds very tempting! Might very well do this, especially during the time my girlfriend is taking the "sex and the city-tour"  ;D :P

Manhattan is fine after dark. Brooklyn... eh, not terrible. Although the only experiences I've had there were after concerts in the early morning. The usual beggar is out 24/7.

I've had a few run-ins with hookers and drug addicts in the Bronx and Queens, at all hours of the day.

Staten Island is... well. Staten Island is a dump. Literally. It used to be the home of Fresh Kills, the world's largest landfill. It's now a park, though I wouldn't step foot on it. I even feel the need for a shower just driving past it. :P

Too bad I'll be gone during the time you're nearby. I'd love to take you spotting at Sky Manor/JFK!

New York is one of the safest citys in the USA. But just like any other place in the world there are lowlifes, just beware of strangers being overly friendly, don't expose flashy jewerly, other than that,  keep a sharp eye and bushy tail!

And DONT DONT DONT take your gun!  Bastard New York law forbids it.  I dont got anywhere I can't pack my trusty Ruger LCP .380 at the very least.  I prefer my S@W Model 1911, but its just so damn long.

New York is kinda funny these days, in terms of where you and your money are safe. Hookers and drug addicts would certainly like some of your money, but they are not likely to rob you.
