I presume it has something to do with Thanksgiving which I believe was yesterday.

"Black Friday" is the day after Thanksgiving in which all the retail stores put out all the new toys and gift items, and sell them at a ridiculously low price.

Sounds like our New Year sales which in recent times have started on Boxing Day. (Boxing Day is the day after Christmas Day.) The British public finally caught on to this con so the sales now start before Christmas. In the current economic climate the next couple of weeks should be a good time for genuine bargains. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/recession/3522687/Price-cut-frenzy-in-sales-war-between-supermarkets-and-high-street-shops.html

I believe it's called "Black" Friday, because it's the start of the shopping period that retailers hope will put them, "in the black" for the year.. (as opposed to "in the red")

Surprised the PC brigade have not said something though.

Huh! Black Friday and I happen to be in America. Woke up at normal UK time this morning, and was greeted by FOX and NBC in my hotel room showing live pictures of queues outside of "Best Buy" in various places.

Just ventured down to our nearest "Best Buy" a couple of minutes walk away, and it isn't too packed (by UK standards). I much preferred Barnes and Noble next door! :)

I have to work this afternoon, but luckily people aren't out buying 7up products. The bad time for me is right before Thanksgiving and Christmas, not after. I put in some overtime earlier this week and believe me, it was bad. ;)

Wow.
Wow doesn't nearly cover it. It is totally assinine that someone must be killed so you can get your on sale gifts that no one can survive without; stampeding like enraged buffalo to purchase gifts on sale, supposedly, for a holiday in celebration of the one who toppled over the tables of those who'd commercialized the synogogue. The original meaning of Christmas has been lost to the majority lost in hypocritical commercialism.
