I made it to E-6 in the Nuclear Navy at the 6 year point, and was in for 10 years total. Now I work in the Civil Service in the same program as a GS-10. Military service was a good choice for me. I hope that you are starting on a successful military career

Equivelent to an Airman Basic... as you say, the E1 designation is the pay grade, not the actual rank; it doesn't look good to have an E0.An E-1 is the bottom pay grade in the US Army, It carries no stripe at all, but it often referred to as a private.
...or a "Slick Sleeve," soon to become a simple "Ping Wing."You seem to have failed to notice from some of my postings that I served in the military. Since I didn't sign up for 6 years or have any college I started as E-1. But I was still refered to as "Airman Basic", or simply "Airman."
