I remember at the time he went missing, I loaded up my FS 2004, and with the aid of my highly detailed California/Nevada relief Maps, spent some time observing the area in the Sierra Nevada mountains where he was reported missing.
It was immediately obvious that a small aircraft missing in that area would be extremely difficult to locate.
The remote, densely wooded, sparsely populated Sierra Nevada Mountains are not a place to suffer aircraft failure!
I'm going to load up my Sim now, study my maps, and have a peek at the Mammoth Lake area now, which was out of range of the previous official search area.

P.S....WOW!....Spooky..or what!..

I fired up my FS 2004 Beech Baron 58 in Multiplayer. filed a Flight Plan* from Bishop to Modesto, via Mammoth/Yosemite, the possible intended route flown by Steve Fossett...

...and guess what... ...!

My computer crashed/locked up at Mammoth Lake, while at 20.000 feet ASL to clear the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with a fatal error.
I had to re-start up in Safe Mode, and re-install my Video drivers again!

...at least I was fortunate, and survived the crash!... ...!

I hope they find enough of him to put an end to it. I don't think they stand much chance of discovering what caused the aircraft to crash.

Not sure what makes you think he crossed the mountains. If the map on the BBC News page from your link is correct he had no need to. Mammoth Lakes is approximately 90 miles due south of the Flying M Ranch where he took off from.

LOL Succinctly put but I suspect there's a bit more to it. I wouldn't expect a pilot of his experience to do something like that.

That's only media speculation. I understood that he didn't tell anyone where he was going, not even his wife. That's why they didn't know where to look. If he was flying to Sacramento across the mountains I can't see how he could possibly end up where he did.

Precisely. The Super Decathlon is not suitable for that sort of trip. The service ceiling is 15,800 ft. http://www.amerchampionaircraft.com/newac/decath/sdspecs.htm

Plane clearly "flew into" the mountainside.  Plane mostly disintegrated on impact.  No human remains in the crashed plane.  Objects found MILES away from the crash site.  Experienced explorer, and balloon pilot who has used a parachute before to get out of screwed up aircraft.

Did he have a chute in the plane?  Did he leave the aircraft pre-impact?
