Now that the world record for the 100 metres has been broken and set at 9,69 seconds, there must come a time when it is no longer possible to break, the absolute limit of human endeavor. My father in law, who is a retired sports teacher thinks that this limit will get to around 9,5 seconds and after that will never be broken again (drugs free) and will stand forever. What do you think?

This was regarded as a minor miracle at the time but since then World records in all events are broken on a regular basis which doesn't seem possible. I know timing methods are far more accurate now but there has to be a limit somewhere.

Well looking how little effort he put into the last 10 to 15 meters, it wouldn't surprise me if his time would have been sub 9.5 had he powered to the line. He also got a fairly slow start from what I read. So a perfect run would have been very quick. Personally I think 9 seconds is the absolute limit as to whats possible, but thats with a perfect start, the max allowable tail wind and a flawless run.

Track and field is the only part of the games I can really stand, alongside judo.

I can't help but wonder how much is actually human and how much is technology. A case in point is the tracks they run run today. How fast would they be if they still ran on clay or cinders and wore the same attire form 30 years ago?

I suspect when Bolt does run to his full potential (9.60 perhaps - even though he does back off, I think another metre or two ahead may still be beyond him), his tall size may ensure record stands as long as Bob Beamon's 1968(?) long jump record, which stood until the '91 World Champs.

As long as you're properly attired* (not necessarily as tired as afterward), we'd rather not forget. Someone get the cameras, a couple truckloads of hot cinders and get over to Fozzer's... and don't let him talk you into letting him use his bike.

I do believe that the fastest 100m sprint ever before that was something like 9.78 seconds but the guy was disqualified for drugs.

9.72, Usain Bolt.

Ben Johnson did 9.78 in the 1988 Olympics, but then got busted for drugs. It's somewhat ironic that the eventual winner, Carl Lewis legitimately broke the world record in that race too.
