From Florida, The Retirement State

Postby H » Sun Aug 03, 2008 3:03 pm

Just after 11 p.m. two masked gunmen came into the Plantation, FL, Subway at 1949 N. Pine Rd. There was a lone diner -- 71-year-old John Lovell, who was finishing his meal. The thieves robbed the cashier, then turned their attention to Lovell.
When police arrived they found cash strewn about the front of the Subway shop, one of the robbers lying inside the shop and their K-9 unit located the other in the bushes next door. Both were rushed to the hospital where 22-year-old Donicio Arrindell of North Lauderdale died and 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale remained in critical but stable condition.
A longtime friend of the 71-year-old wasn't surprised to hear what happened. "He'd give you the shirt off his back -- and he'd be mad if someone tried to take the shirt off your back."
Lovell had been a Marine pilot, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. After military retirement, he worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta. As soon as the thieves had his money in hand, Lovell pulled his handgun*, shooting both in the head and one in the chest.
He is not expected to be charged, Det. Robert Rettig of the Plantation P.D. said, "He was in fear for his life. These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70's have military backgrounds and aren't intimidated by idiots."

* Florida law allows law-abiding (never crime-convicted) citizens to carry a concealed weapon.

We could do with a law like that over here in the UK...

Alas it's never going to happen

I dearly hope not. We have quite enough problems without that.

PS. When was the last time you heard about an armed hold-up in the UK?

I know what you mean Doug, my point was that the criminals over here are treated as the victims.. my little brother had his car window smashed the other day, the police caught him red handed.. the little (16 year old) scroat admitted the crime, and also admitted to THREE other similar offences the same night.
The CPS gave him a slapped wrist, despite the local police having a VERY strong case for prosecution, even the arresting officer was sympathetic and apologetic to my brother.
My brother is now

Don't recall seeing this on local news TV.  About time someone dealt with these criminals.  They just picked the wrong place at the wrong time.  A lot of robberies, etc. take place in that county, they make the news all the time, compared to the county directly to the south, which is where I live.  I once asked a police officer why there are greater incidents there, he said it's a matter of population density.

It's scary to think that the average law-abiding citizen could become a victim just because they're going to the bank or getting a bite to eat.  Whatever, perhaps Lovell's brave action saved an innocent life down the line.  We somehow have a hard time keeping career criminals behind bars, I wonder if these guys had a rap sheet.
