Navy Medals of 1812

Navy Medals of 1812

I recently found a medal from 1812 that was earned by (I think) my great great great grandfather.  The name on the back reads "William Claude FitzPatrick".

Not much on Military ranks and know how but that looks a lot like the navy Cross.

War of 1812 service medal - The ribbon is throwing me off. This may be a posthumous award?

It resembles a navy cross but if that were the case, trust me your family would know about it, the only higher ranking award in the Navy/Marine Corps is the Medal of Honor.

1812 service medal looks about right though.  That's an awesome piece of history you found there!!!!  I love military history and if I got my hands on something like that I wouldnt stop grinnin for weeks  ;D

I guess I wasn't reading very well yesterday. You say that on the back is engraved your relatives name? Now I'm not sure about way back when, but modern medals that are engraved with a persons name are to my knowledge always a posthumous award.
