Minnesota, a 20-year-old Przewalski horse, had a vasectomy in 1999 at the Minnesota Zoo. Scientists later realized Minnesota was one of the most genetically valuable horses in the North American breeding program, which is based on the genes of only fourteen animals. Veterinarian Luis Padilla, who performed the reversal surgery at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo in October of 2007 with the assistance of urologist Dr. Sherman Silber, said the operation was a first. Dr.Silber, who pioneered 13,000 human vasectomies, stated that, "The human becomes the 'test animal'... we've made so much progress because the human really is the perfect model."

Meanwhile, to be selected by July, the only expectation of the filly/mare in waiting is that she may eventually be feeling a little hoarse.

Odd that they would perform a vasectomy on livestock at all. In my experience it's a full castration, chemical or otherwise, that is usually performed.
