Scientists later realized Minnesota was one of the most genetically valuable horses in the North American breeding program, which is based on the genes of only fourteen animals. Veterinarian Luis Padilla, who performed the reversal surgery at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo in October of 2007 with the assistance of urologist Dr. Sherman Silber, said the operation was a first. Dr.Silber, who pioneered 13,000 human vasectomies, stated that, "The human becomes the 'test animal'... we've made so much progress because the human really is the perfect model."
