Lets not make this political, but focus on the disruption to others. President Bush arrives at Heathrow on Friday and it is projected to cause up to six hours of delays for passengers. Why not fly into any one of the American air bases or RAF stations instead with the added security of a military station. This could go for ANY leader of ANY country, not just President Bush. I sometimes think that the people who have to organise all this get lost in their own self importance.

you'd have thought if they like causing all the commotion they do over what they call security measures, then indeed somewhere like an airforce base would be a far better place, you can be almost sure as to who is on the airbase at all times.
Usually though they'll have these arrivals at night or early morning before the rush to try and avoid causing major delays.

I can sum it up in one word. Ridiculous.
Thing is, it's always been the same regardless of who the guy incharge is.
There was an episode of airport a few years ago documenting the arrival of Clinton and all the things they did for it then.
I'd imagine by now they actually do have a plan in place to cause minimal disruption.

I guess, possibly because after APEC at YSSY, they found flying into a civil airport (surrounded by land) safe, and didn't find it necessary to get into Northolt/Lyneham etc.
For a country where several people have RPGs (its no Grail, but still...), amazingly the VC-25 flew in through 16R (look at position of 16R in Google Earth). This approach goes right over several residential areas, highways, and even a water tower..
The only other thing I can add is...
..happy spotting! ;)
Be thankful you don't have Ilyushins shaking the hell out of your house.

Better make that the whole weekend. According to the report you quoted the big man arrives on Sunday. I obviously don't know his itinerary or where he's staying but I would steer well clear of London & the M25 for the next few days. It's bad enough already without all this nonsense.

I know after Hurricane Katrina we hated all the dignitaries coming into the area, all they did was blockade the roads and get in the way. We were stuck in a traffic jam for hours because of the presidential motorcade. All of these people HAVE to come and see the damage, but they don't realize the problems they are causing.

I still think high-profile leaders should travel alone, in disguise... a lot less fuss and expense, and they'd probably be safer.
Dubya could don a beret and a striped shirt, and arrive with a baguette under his arm... who'd suspect a Frenchman of actually being the POTUS?
