I read this and had to laugh all this pc Bs today is just getting far to serious about things

Blind people have been handling paper money for a long, long time. Very few merchants, etc., even the crooked ones, would have the heart to rip off a blind person; I don't see what the big deal is.

If folding corners or trusting others doesn't work, they could use a hole punch to make small holes in the bills (embossing would wear down eventually; money travels quite a bit).
Or is that legal? Hmmm.
Anyway, instead of making bills different sizes or whatever, maybe the Treasury could punch the holes, if it's not legal for individuals to do so... a very simple solution, although I really don't want my tax money used to pay for setting that up...  >:(

Maybe just angle the corners differently to distinguish them.

As far as I can remember the old currency (the Dutch Guilder) had notes in different sizes with raised markings. Euro notes still have different sizes. The 5 Euro note being the smallest, ending with the 1000 Euro note being the biggest with the size of a roll of wallpaper (I think, never saw one in real life).

...mm....whilst I can see some advantages of having all banknotes the same size....these as I can see it are to facilitate the manufacture and printing processes of them (one machine fits all sort of thing) and  do nothing to help in their day to day use.......especially  to the blind...

Living in Britain...I am used to differing sizes for different denominations and find it most helpful. I have to be most careful when in the US that I don't overtip etc (some chance you might say::))

I would have to agree with commoner on this one.

I was very surprised to find all denomination banknotes to be all the same size on my first visit to the USA. Surprisingly I had no problems with this myself but wondered at the time how a blind person would distinguish between them. I assumed there must be some sort of ident mark on them somewhere but it appears I was wrong. If the lower denomination coins need to be different shapes & sizes then it seems obvious to me that this should apply to the much more valuable banknotes.

...not so sure about that :-/......how easy would it be to change the embossing from 10 to 100 or even 1000 I wonder? Any braille experts out there?

I'm not sure this would be practical. Greenbacks tend to age rather quickly. They're more like cloth than paper.

That is because paper money is not actually paper, but a very, very, very fine linen. The way to go would be the Australian way, plastic paper money (they have had it since 1988!!!!!). It last a lot longer and if it gets wet it does not matter. If you used that method, embossing would probably last a lot longer than on paper. Also with plastic it would probably be possible to put a very slight wave in the thickness for example to aid identification without effecting the ability to fold he note.

However, rather than go to another country and ask how it is done, we can instead spend billions researching the problem plus court costs from various interested parties and sending politicians on holidays research and development trips funded by the tax payer.....us, just like the UK ID card instead of asking Germany, France or Holland how they do it. I have recently taken duel nationality, my ID card here is Germany,

How about the plastic money also known as credit cards?  I never even carry much cash these days, because the places that don't accept credit cards are farther and farther between.
