Just listened to this, live, on BBC Radio4...

Very amusing, and enlightening, and somewhat terrifying!... :o...>>>>

The mind boggles. It's bad enough on a short bus journey.

Just remember its up to the airlines to put in place the final rules, and these sorts of its safe to use them reports and allowances are in place elsewhere, but airlines still keep the phones banned. I know any future flights I make will be with a carrier who have the ban in place. You dont need to use your phone in the air, no matter what the situation you cant change it at 30,000ft so you may aswell wait till your on the ground.

I'm sure I'm going to get a poke on the nose very soon... :-/...!

I've now got into an awful habit of glowering at anyone who receives or makes a Mobile 'Phone call* within 10/(50) feet of me...and an overwhelming desire to kick them in the Nuts, (or whatever is there)!.... :o...!

I take great pride in walking around in Public knowing that my (emergency) 'Phone in my pocket is switched OFF!...
..and never make a call (emergency) if anyone else is within sight!...... :)...!

My life is plagued by other people's bleedin' Ring Tones, and annoying, one-way, loud, long, conversations!

Is there somewhere, quiet, peaceful, that I/we can emigrate to, since the invention of the Bloody Mobile 'Phone?.... ::)...!

Paul.... ;D...!

* ...I have the same effect on other peoples Barking Bloody Dogs!... >:(...!

... ;D...!

The other thing to note is the price. The figures I've heard would certainly probably limit it to a "I'll be down in half an hour" type calls. $4 or $5/minute ballpark.

The only thing that I have against this is being sat next to, in front off or behind one of those people who firmly believe that everyone with ear shot wants to hear the conversation. Why do people on mobiles have to shout?
Also not forgetting those who will have to make the inevitable, "You will never guess where I am calling from" call, even though it has just cost 20 quid.
However, it will be interesting to see what the pilots union are going to say.

I don't know who gets it first, but I know who would get it last. You want to disturb Helga as she is laying into her husband, be my guest, but please don't ask me to hold your coat ;D

Yet another way my fellow pax can irritate me... and of course when it first becomes ubiquitous, it'll be just like when cell phones first became common: all the idiots making those "guess where I am?" calls... somebody just shoot me...  :'(

Don't worry I have the perfect answer to this. Being an aircraft mech, all I have to do is pull the circuit breaker to the equipment that collects your signal and forwards it from the aircraft and enter the system into the HIL as INOP ;D ;D

"I also call on airlines and operators to create the right conditions on board aircraft to ensure that those who want to use in-flight communication services do not disturb other passengers," she said.

How does she propose they do that? I ask myself. I suggest that all passengers wishing to use the blasted things go outside. >:(

...suggest they divide the cabin into "Phoning" and "No Phoning" compartments...one or the other to be 100% sound proof............Peace in one and Bedlam in t'other.......No changing compartments allowed in flight, and an airlock strictly in case of emergencies only..........commoner :D
