Maple Syrup

Good morning all.... :)

Yes we are part way through the harvesting of Maple Syrup.
The trees are tapped during late February, March and April with the sap being collected and boiled down.

Many of the commercial sugar bushes are open to the public and we have seen a variation in prices this year from $55.00 and upwards for a Canadian Gallon of Maple Syrup.

We no longer tap here on our property as it is way to much work, however when the children were home we did it yearly and for our own consumption and use.
The old girl uses Maple Syrup for: baking, cooking, on ice cream, pancakes, French toast and I like to take a bowl of it and just dip buttered bread into it and eat it like that.

I manage to get a gallon or two for free as I fly in several cases of wobbly pop to a friend who taps and has his own bugsmasher strip.

Just thought of something...hope it makes you laugh... :)

Years ago before we started school busing children into the larger centers (now some of the children are on buses 90 minutes one way) and we are looking at going back to modern rural schools.

Well they used to bring the city children on tours to farms and children used to go on tours to the Canadian Mint, Royal Ontario Museum and places like that.
Well one day I was asked if two bus loads of eleven and twelve year olds could come out and see how Maple Syrup was made. (thanks to one of our children at school) Now this was back in the late 50s me thinks.
It was a windy day and me (who else) told the little darlings to go hug a tree and put your left ear to the trunk and you would be able to hear the sap running (flowing). Most of them couldn't get both arms around a tree.
Sure enough I looked over later and there they were, all the children, the teachers and teachers helpers all hugging trees.  Of course one of our brats told the old girl who came out of the sugar shack and I was standing in the corner of the barn for a week.  ;D

Of course I won't mention what this country bumkin did the first time he visited a big city, but you know those corner phones marked Police and Fire, you really can't call home on them.   ::)   :-X

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

I miss the days of making maple syrup :'(  Used to have so many sugar maple trees we could never tap even 1/2 of them.  Still made quite a few gallons every year.  Always had a line of neighbors waiting to buy a fresh pint or dozen soon as the furnace was stocked with wood and fired up 8-)  Now I only have one maple tree in front of the house...don't think the town would like it much if a couple gallon jugs started hanging off it :-/

I knew some folks who made their own little batch from trees on their property every year... excellent syrup but man, the house stunk for weeks when they were making it! ;D
A little cloying...

I recently learned that one of the local "treats" that kids who grow up in New Hampshire enjoy (damn my parents for moving to Massachusetts when I was a toddler) is maple syrup over snow.

..mmm....well I must admit I developed a liking for the stuff from visiting Canada to see my son and grandkids who live there.......BUT after seventy-odd years of putting GOLDEN SYRUP on my pancakes and dipping my home made bread into that ...well, I admit I might be just a TAD biased but I'm sticking (? ::)) with the golden variety...........yumm! yumm!........commoner ;D

Thanks!  What does it taste like?

....well..must admit it doesn't have such a "characteristic" flavour as  the Maple, which is unmistakeable, but it is just so...Sweet, Sweet.....Sweeeeet......it just is wonderful........who doesn't like SWEET?...commoner ;D
