I really hope one day these people are subjected to a mugging and some minor physical violence. I wonder how quickly they would change their minds about it. ::)

A better alternative would be to throw the scumbags in the slammer to go cold turkey and throw away the key until they're clean and no longer addicted.  >:(  >:(

ok somone explain to me how this makes any frigging sense!!!

they will not be sent to jail IF IT CAN BE SHOWN THEY WHERE MOTIVATED BY DESPERATION OR NEED

so its now ok to be a junkie do ILLEGAL drugs, go a hour without a fix and u can jump some poor person beat them, steal their hard earned cash and get your next fix. and all this just lands you with community service and a record.... i hate this country at times.

does this mean, if your are desperate to feed your family and it needs to be done, you can walk into tesco and grab yourself some food and walk out without paying?

You just showed that you dont know anything about drugs. In this case, I would rather be silent.

What makes me wanna spit is the amount of hate and bigotry included in the replys to this thread.
If you dont like the way your society deals with HUMANS, you better head off to "great" countrys like Iran or USA where people are killed or sent to jail forever for minor offences.

Having been burgled twice, sorry but you are also showing you know nothing about the general situation.

This is bad, but the burglars were humans and should be treated that way...because we claim to be civilized. But comments like the ones above make me sick and angry as they show me that big parts of the so-called civilized western world (especially US) are nothing but inhuman savages without any consideration of human rights.

But I know, this forum is us-influenced, so feel free to bash me.

...I don't think they are classed as "Humans"... ::)...

They come under the general classification of "Low-Life, Toe-Rags", and serve no useful purpose, whatsoever.

Most of us have come into contact with them at some time or other...

Certainly a different breed from the majority of us.

Why should I bash you?? Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Mine is that if you transgress the law, you lose some of your human rights. And no, buglers are not human, they are rapists, homes rapists. Until you come home and find every draw in you house emptied out, furniture moved, dirty foot prints in the middle of your bed, then I cannot convey just how I felt/feel about it. It is one of those things that you have to experience and I do pray that you never, ever have to. The first few seconds when you find out, well the anger level would even make the Pope kill.

Well, I have to disagree. You can do whatever you want, you will always stay human. Even Stalin or Hitler were humans! And all humans have their human rights which they cannot lose.
The opinion "if you transgress the law, you lose some of your human rights" is extremely dangerous, as we have seen in the past; according to this point of view, it

What?!?!

Nobody is proposing that we put these people to death here, but the current jail sentace for stealing from someone (according to the article) is 18 weeks and they're working to make it shorter.  18 weeks?  What is the dis-incentive to robbing people?  If you get caught you MAY get 18 weeks behind bars with your basic needs (food, clothing, shelter) taken care of.  No torture, no corporal punishment.

I think the conditions are good (I don't want to see theives tortured) but the length of sentance just isn't going to keep anyone from stealing.

Keep in mind: this is a violent crime.  These criminals are taking an innocent person and threatening them with bodily harm.  Do those victims deserve protection, or is part of being human the right to treat those weaker than you however you want?

I think it is you who do not know how to treat your fellow humans.  You're proposing that we strenghten the incentive for people to be violent towards one another by reducing their already light sentances.  How much is enough?  Perhaps, in the name of being nice, we should take away all punishment for violent crime?  That sounds grossly inhuman to me...

prison is not punishment in the UK its a holiday from what you hear on the news, I think it was one of the moore's murderers who killed sevearl kids in the 70's leads a life of leisure pretty much. IMHO you kill someone in the street you have no human rights as you removed theirs. burglers are buggers altough when i lived in manchester we came home and the burglers where still in the house, my neighbor chased one and sat on him until the police arrived ;D ;D

the UK is becoming a joke! an absolute joke! people will not get jobs because its easier to live on the dole! you can be high on an illegal substance and not be sent to prison (maybe see how this goes) and we have stuck up politicians raving about being PC when they have no first hand experience of the annoyance!
