penalties

not really a hockey fan but my wife is...figure that.....she said it seems that the referees are getting tougher on penalties which i think is great, true or not.....seems to be so much bashing around that i figure, get rid of the puck, just bash each other around until the last ones standing win......i dunno...i seem to remember in the early days in montreal with maurice richard, dicky more and boom boom jeffreon etc, there seemed to be so much emphasis on skill with teamwork and passing rather than just overpowering the oponent with brute force...but this is maybe my own illusion  :) cheers, vic

I was always under the impression that the whole point of ice-hockey was for Canadians to let loose all their anger and other peoples teeth ;D
Mind you I only ever saw games in Toronto and on the telly so I might have got the wrong impression...
Can anyone explain to me why hockey players wear shorts over all their armour and trousers? Will a thin piece of nylon really protect their nadgers from a scything skate blade?

Not long ago there was a Calgary vancouver game, this game was surprisingly quick to play. Usually these two teams beat the hell out of each other, but in this case the refs let the minor things go, the players seemed to relax instead of take advantage of this and what ensued was a fast paced highly skilled game of hockey that was exciting and actioned filled. The secodn the refs get involved for every little thing is when the game goes boring, and I hope its not the case.

Mark, with all the armour they have, you dont think they protect the fella's?
The only incident I have seen in Hockey that was truely worrying was the goalie who had his throat slashed by a skate blade back in the 80's. Thats why they now have the guard around the neck. The guy survived but not sure I'd want to play a game where the ice was covered in blood.
