Have you tried emptying your "Internet Cache" lately? This might help a bit?  :-/

I have no idea what ISP's are available in the UK? :-/

I'm stuck with a little mom and pop phone company. I've tried every ISP I can find and they either don't service my area or they're way to expensive.  ::)

I'm paying $40.00 USD per month for about a meg. The ISP I have sucks big time..... >:(

Hello Rom... ;)..!

It would appear that everyone's Internet service is slowly going "down the pan" regarding Internet Service, Broadband speeds, ever-increasing E-Mail Spam, etc, etc.... :'(...!

I think it's time to get my trusty "Quill Pen" out again, and remember how we used to write "Letters" in the "good-old-days"... ::)...!

Bloody "Internet".... >:(...!

..LOL... ;D...!

Paul...(Fingers stained with ink!).... ::)...!

Howdy Fozz,

If you're speeds have only slowed as of late,  then Holiday shopping may be to blame. Not so much from people making online purchases, but all those happy people buying little Johnny and Suzie gifts, and flooding the net with credit card transactions.

Aside from that, I'd do the standard stuff........spyware and anti-virus scans (maybe your machine has the flu, 'tis the season ya know) as well as what Romulus suggested and do a disk clean-up, delete yer cookies and such and see it that helps.

If it comes right down to it, call your ISP and complain. It's not right paying for service that they can't deliver.

Fozzer,

If your contract says "up to 2 Meg"..................... remember that 56k is ALSO contained within that  ;).  In other words.. the minimum is not specified....just the maximum.  So basically.... you are screwed.

Is there another provider you can switch to?

best,

I'm now with BT, and they're pretty good. Wanadoo lost our custom after managing to make a complete balls up of transferring broadband to our new house. Twice. ::)

My ISP are a bunch of idiots. I've called and complained and there is only one guy that is suppose to know anything about the Internet. This mythical creature has never been there to talk to nor has he ever returned a call in 8 years. I've tried e-mailing my complaints and the e-mails come back as undeliverable....lmao. The SOB probably has blocked my e-mail address.

Some how or another they seem to have a monopoly on all the Internet service in my area, No one seems willing to venture in and put these morons out of business.

They also provide cable and it is so archaic that it's not funny. I asked them about HD and the woman didn't know what the crap it was! They don't care what their customers want. They only have programing that they think is appropriate. Then they wonder why they've lost so much business to DirecTV and Dish Network.... ::)

Thank God I got DirecTV, even if I have "Line of Sight" issues and I can't p/u the HD satellites from my location.....  :'(....at least the normal satellite works perfectly..... :)

Out of curiosity... ;)...>>>

In order that any complaint is made to the right quarter, who is ultimately responsible for the the overall speed of the Internet, the Service provider (who provides the Browser Service), the Phone Company* (who provides and controls the phone line network), or both...?

Paul... :)...!

Emptied my hard drive of all sorts of bugs, worms, common cold Virus's, Roman Trojan Soldiers, flies, dust, next door neighbour's Dog's hairs, etc, but my streaming Video is still akin to watching Buster Keaton in a black and white film, on a flickering 1920's movie projector!.... :'(...!

*In our case: British Telecom.

They tend to get you on the "Up to" bit.  This is the time of year that things slow down anyways but shouldn't slow down to that extreme :o

Currently spending $15 a month on 768K DSL through our Verizon phone service.  Typically runs about 700K to 725K.  Still perfectly fine for me after our last internet disaster.  If anyone ever has a cable company known as Mediacom offer you "Highspeed" DSL....run >:(  I used to have 56K dial up that usually kept at 56K...paid about $9 a month.  This Mediacom service was supposed to be fast DSL...$15 a month...but it ran at about 28K >:(  Called and asked what was going on...somewhere in the fine print it said we had service for up to a whopping 32K >:(  I could have reached through the phone and strangled the guy when he told me "Technically it IS highspeed." >:( >:(  My dial up was faster but we were locked into a 1 year contract and breaking it would have meant a $500 charge >:(  Could have shot someone when I found that little detail out...and it was down more time then it was up and running >:(  But that was the past and now happily running at over 700K :)

I've only lost a couple Ks over the past couple weeks...slowest I've seen it was about 650K on the weekend which is still fast enough for me.  As for dropping over a meg that seems a bit fishy to me.

On the topic of DSL...why is it some areas can get it but its refused to others?  My current service is through the phone line, I've found out the source of it comes from Fort Wayne, not local.  I will be moving soon about 4 miles out of town into the country, same company controls the phone lines out there.  But I cant get DSL...only their dial up service :(  If the main source is in Fort Wayne then it makes no sense why I cant get it out there too even if it runs a little slower :-/  Its about the same distance from the source as it is now...the only difference is its out in the country instead of in town...country people should have access to it too >:(  Don't see why I cant get it.  I could only see this happening if the main source was local but its not :-/
