Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing.

Unbelievable!  >:(

Negligent, dare I say bordering on criminal. To say any more than that would be political, so I'll stop.

Utterly incompetant - just what we've come to expect from officialdom in the UK. Sadly it also isn't surprising to hear.

Luckily we have a dedicated bank account set up to receive Child Benefit so if any criminals wish to pilfer that then they won't be getting much as it's paying for Charlie's Nursery fees... When it goes in, it goes out  8-)

However, knowing my and CharlottesMum's personal details is a litle bit more serious.

To say any more than that would be political, so I'll stop.

Me too...  :-X  :-X  :P

1) how big would the disk capacity have to be do you reckon?

2) WHY DIDNT THEY BACK IT UP AND FORGET A DISK?

That's not the point. I think it probably is backed up. The problem is where the data has ended up - probably with some criminal organisation with intent to commit fraud. This data included full names, dates of birth, addresses, and worse, bank account details and national insurance details. All very easy for someone to potentially commit identity fraud.

The brainless numpty who dispatched said envelope obviously didn't realise that not all Royal Mail workers may well not be honest as they should be. I'd certainly be intrigued if I received a batch of mail from a goverment department including a plain (ie, not recorded or special delivery) envelope obviously containing disks if I was on not much more than the minimum wage in a sorting office.

2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Don't ex-pats get UK pension rights, along with benefit rights Matt?

Can't blame the Royal Mail this time. It was sent by the internal delivery service operated by TNT. Bad reporting by the BBC again. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7103566.stm

For RM read any delivery service to be quite fair... If it's an "internal" service, that just makes it 10 times worse. ::)

Shocking.

I don't think it's political to point out that a government agency (no matter your political affiliation, or country), is inneficient and incompetent. That's accepted, universal wisdom. And a reason to keep government out of health care (now THAT's political)(couldn't resist)(don't know what came over me)(sometimes ya just gotta blurt something out)(blame me if the thread gets locked)(I'll accept the punishment)  :P  ..

I loved the fact that they sent the first one ..... and it went missing ..... so they sent the second one recorded delivery, as if that's going to make sure it arrives (my wifes ex was a post man).

3 losses of sensitive data in the last year ...... what a great record for HMRC.

Reminds me of when that data of thousands of former US Navy sailors went missing about a year ago. My dad was pissed. :P
