Goodmorning all... :)
Have been inside a bit now from my early morning walk about our little kingdom, just checking on things.

Doug I must be super old fashioned then 'cos I'm only 35 and I do the same (although in Hungary and Britain you're meant to walk on the ladies left) ;)
However I do fail miserably in the profanity column. Once something has upset me I do need to swear like Billy Connolly with Tourettes Syndrome ;D

Goodmorning Mark... :)
Yes I agree Mark but here we walk on the ladies left but use the right aisle or sidewalk, just like when driving a motor vehicle here.

Old fashioned, I don't think so.
-I hold the door open for everyone if I get to the door first (women, other gentlemen, teenagers etc)
-I walk on the left side of her and on the right side of the sidewalk or aisles
-I open the car door for her
-I carry all the luggage, boxes and bag
-I help with the housework including laundry, cooking and dishes
-I do attend special functions with her including church functions
-I do not use profanity nor allow it around
-I do not smoke (occasionally a very very good Cuban cigar)
-I do not wear my hat in the house
-I make sure the vehicle we are taking is warm and ready to go
-I try to look respectable when I go out either with her or alone
-I put our family first, that includes the grandchildren as well

That's not old fashioned. That's what my mother used to call good manners and being respectful towards women.

Crash ;)

+1...I was always taught as a child that I should give respect to my elders and my own peers...I've learned to do just that and to this day, not so much out of fear, but when my dad or mom are shouting at me, I tend to listen in silence and not snap back at them with any smart a$$ responses...Helps alleviate the situation relatively quickly :) ;)

...walk on the left side of her and on the right side of the sidewalk.
Originally, that was on the street side. The gutter was at the edge of the street, next to the sidewalk. Before the days of indoor plumbing, bedpans, washpans, etc. were emptied via an upper story window -- aimed at the gutter; most liquids tend to do a bit of splashing (plus the occasional 'miss') and gentlemen were, evidently, taller than ladies on average because they got more fertilizer.

Amazing, Doug, how after so many years  together she's still trying to make you over. :D
And of course, it's probably not what it appears... those womenfolk are... vexing.
It's part of their job, I guess. ::)

I have some "anachronistic" tendencies, but not when it comes to clothing. I've been lucky enough to avoid work that requires buttons and ties and "hurtin' shoes"... ;D Wearing a tie, fo me, is usually like being the guest of honor at a lynching. ;D
But I will dress up for a lady, if it's a special occasion. ;)

Well, surely that would depend on which way you were going. :P

I think the tradition started in Tudor times when buildings in the main streets of towns & cities were often built with the upper storey overhanging the lower one. I'm not sure if this is the case with old buildings in America. If the gentleman walked on the outside the lady was protected by the overhang from rain or worse originating from above. Being on the outside of the pavement (sidewalk in your language) he would also protect her from any mud or water thrown up by passing vehicles.

Good evening all... :)
Absolutely correct Doug.  :)
I do believe when dining out that the male sits to the left of his female partner or spouse and when dining in (at home) and both partners sit at either end of the table with guests and family to the sides, the male sits facing the door does he not?

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

The outside of the pavement would be the edge of the street, alongside the sidewalk. Originally, on this continent, the street was more often paved than the walkway along it, if either was. Even so, a runoff (a gutter -- often only a down-angle of the edge of the street) was made of the edge of the street into which rain, horse refuse, etc., could be collected.
