To-day is Remembrance Day

Goodmorning all... :)

This morning at 11:00AM all across this great country the young and the old, men and women from all walks of life shall gather at the local cenotaphs (A monument built to honour people whose remains are interred elsewhere or whose remains cannot be recovered) to pay their respects to those who made the supreme sacrifice.
To-day does not just honour those Veterans from World War One, World War Two and the Korean War, but it honours and shows respect to all discharged and presently serving members of all the Armed Services who did and do their duty daily to help keep this a free world for you and I.

Well the old girl and I are both retired, still very active in the community thought, but as we go about our daily chores and routines and we look over our domain daily we don't forget those men and women of our Armed Services and those of our allies who ensure our freedom and lifestyle twenty four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, in all kinds of weather and political bantering.

To-day is the eleventh (11th) day of the eleventh (11th) month and if you get a chance, at the eleventh (11AM) hour in your own little way just say thanks.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Paid my respects at 11 as always, as I frequently do throughout the year - you don't have to wait all year to pay your respects just once. The picture below was taken when I was at Vimy Ridge in France:

Lest we forget.

Oh how do you do, young Willy McBride
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside
And rest for a while in the warm summer sun
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done
And I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
When you joined the great fallen in 1916
Well I hope you died quick
And I hope you died clean
Or Willy McBride, was is it slow and obscene

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined
And though you died back in 1916
To that loyal heart you're forever nineteen
Or are you a stranger without even a name
Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane
In an old photograph torn, tattered, and stained
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

The sun shining down on these green fields of France
The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance
The trenches have vanished long under the plow
No gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now
But here in this graveyard that's still no mans land
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
And a whole generation were butchered and damned

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

And I can't help but wonder oh Willy McBride
Do all those who lie here know why they died
Did you really believe them when they told you the cause
Did you really believe that this war would end wars
Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame
The killing and dying it was all done in vain
Oh Willy McBride it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

BBC Coverage was good as ever. Sadly for some reason they thought it appropriate to invite a poppy-less Will Self into their studio just beforehand, who went on to make a point that he doesn't wear "state enforced" emblems. Idiot. Why did they invite him along to give him the excuse to show public disrespect... ::)

Whats 'state enforced' about a poppy - you make your own choice as to whether you wear one or not. Perhaps he should give it a little more thought the next time he realises that he's not currently speaking German.

No offence to our German members there, just an observation on an English idiot.

Cheers,

Alas there are always some people who'll do dumb things like this to get attention for themselves and their own petty egos. I seem to recall the last lot were Chumbawamba (that annoying band) who proclaimed when a police officer was murdered that "Justice had been done", funnily enough when the lead singer had his house broken into the police were "Tooooooo busy to come round as we're trying to stop all the anarchists who like your band" and I think the message was received as he never said anything idiotic like that again.
Charlie if we can find Will Selfs address could you arrange the napalm? ;D

If you guys (the Brits) feel strongly about the issue I just thought and checked and the Beeb do have a complaints page http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/make_co ... tep1.shtml I was pretty blunt in my message to them ;)

Good evening all... :)

Well we are finally home and yes it was a long day, not just for a couple of seniors like us but everyone that took part.
I would say everything we saw went off without a hitch and what an attendance, record crowds, and the young people, yes the young people, teenagers, they sure earned our respect to-day, they filled the crowd and participated where and when they could.
I guess we can honestly say there is still hope for mankind yet.  ;)   :)

After the parade of veterans and military people, scouts, guides and cadets we all tried to get into the Royal Canadian Legion, it was standing room only with so many folks out in the parking lot.
We then mingled for several hours and then the old girl and I paid our respects to the local bug smasher field where there were more club members and guests than you would find at a regular meeting!   :o
Leaving there we attended the Royal Canadian Legion Dinner which was hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and as always the meal was superb with an excellent guest speaker.

We met old friends and we missed some old friends, I am sure they were visiting other services as we have not seen their names posted in the "Last Post".
I had the privilege of speaking to several young (very young) Army Privates who were on course at the local Armed Forces Base (CFB Trenton formerly Royal Canadian Air Force Station Trenton) as I knew it and being amongst the junior service they certainly had their opinions of the Air Element.    ;D LMAO
It was all in good fun though...hell I haven't been called a pigeon in a long long time.   :)

We missed our children who never miss a Remembrance Day Service where ever they are stationed, but three of them are out of the country on foreign service and one I was told not to ask where he was going, so we didn't.  However, as parents we miss them all on days like this.   :-X

I guess in closing, I myself think Remembrance Day is everyday, not just one day a year which happens to be to-day.
Seeing and hearing what we did to-day, sure I think there is hope for the future of mankind, we must keep in mind politicians start wars and these folks need to be educated in reality, it's members of all branches of the Armed Services that end the wars politicians start.

So, where does Simviation fit into this little topic, well in my humble opinion it is the forums, forums just like this one that help educate the younger generation and rekindle memories of the older members so that the same mistakes are not repeated.
Many members like to fly the fighter aircraft, fire the weapons and drop the bombs, the bigger the bang the better.  The military aircraft just like a ship or tank is a tool of the trade, keep in mind they are not always used for destruction, we had a Canadian Forces CF-18 fly blood from one side of the country to another location to save a child in a sick childrens hospital, no airliner could have done that so quickly, and the weather was atrocious.  How many times does weapons of war and destruction help aid the civil power...lots and lots and lots.  Search and Rescue, done by the military here in Canada, these folks put their lives on the line all the time but we seldom hear about it.
I think the forums do play a role in the every day lives of the members here at Simviation, real life situations and information is shared, new ideas formed about aviation in the real world and not what hollywood or the movie producers would like you to believe in.

Well folks there is my two cents worth and I hope you got as much out of to-day as I did.   :)

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
