Okay. I just watched one of the best movies I've EVER seen:

At the end there's Dustin Hoffman (as Babe) pointing a gun on Laurence Olivier (as 'The white angel' Szell), ordering him to eat the diamond in his suitcase.

At this very point I got the idea:

If you found a suitcase full of diamonds, how could you legally make the big money with it?

I just don't think it can be that easy...

Surprisely, there have been several stories in the news about people finding large sums of money (one while walking his dog here in town, about 9K I believe) and he turned it in. Got a reward of $2000, but he insisted that it be donated to charity, which it was.

So what you want to know is....
Is it safe?



You couldn't do it legally, but I think the diamonds in question were stolen from people who were "liquidated" along with any record of ownership, so "Babe" might have easily gotten away with pocketing a few and pawning them... where else but in New York?

The logical choice is to hand it over to the police, as they most likely got a report that the valuables were lost.
The police won't give you a reward, the owner of the valuables will give you the reward (maybe).
This happens often in New York: people leave Stradivarius violins and biefcases full of cash in taxicabs, that sort of thing.
But it never makes the news if the cabbie is not honest...

If the question is: am I guaranteed a reward if I am honest and do not keep the stuff?

The rule used to be that if lost property remained unclaimed after a certain period it was returned to the finder. Unless this has been changed the money was obviously claimed by someone. Either that or it mysteriously disappeared while in police custody.

If I remember correctly the phrase used when he asked about the 30day rule was "It will probably be needed as evidence." Which he interpreted as bog off you've got no chance.

At least they finally managed to catch the right bloke after 30 years. Shame about the chap they chucked in prison for 16 years...
