I hope some of you have checked in on the 1000-day sail; I check in regularly and noticed tonight that they've posted a great clip from a 1986 voyage to Antarctica with the intrepid schooner Anne.... a fascinating glimpse of some hardcore sailing.
If anyone can identify the derelict aircraft shown in the clip, I'd like to know...

Not true -- but large verticle ones can be disatrous, even for a sailing submarine!

I understand that the sea is not always flat... wasn't really thinking of subs, either.
What I meant was they have fewer options... for finding favorable wind, visibility, etc.
Although, on the other hand, you're better off, initially, in a boat that's lost power than an airplane that's lost power...

Oh, that is so true. Given a choice, I'd rather have a boat lose power over a plane that loses power any day of the week, and twice on Sunday!

The problem when losing power in a boat is currents. If you can't get the engine started, and you don't have a sail or some oars (ever trapped your thumb between your oars when rowing? Ouch...) you are stuck.

Then again, it's far easier to affect a resue at sea than when airborne.

True, your chances of surviving the next hour are better in a boat that's lost power than in a plane, but in a plane you have more options.  In a boat all you can do is sit and wait (and maybe use the radio).  :)
