Hi
if you live in the UK, im sure youll know about the rain, but you might know about the dam at Rotherham (Were i live)
What will happen if this bursts?

Well, we're a bit stymied by your wonder... :-?
Perhaps you don't dam the same thing over there -- if a dam bursts on this side of the pond, we'd expect a huge gush of water.

I've heard of this dam. All I can say is sit tight, but be ready to get to higher ground at a moment's notice

Yes they have a relief channel ....... that is what caused the structural damage ..... when it overflowed because of too much rain :-/ :-/

river + settlemnet = flood
dam prevents flood
so
settlement + dam = safe from flooding
settlement - dam in question = wet settlement
or something like that

What i heard on the radio is that they are trying to pump water out to reinforce the structure, but at this rate it will fill up again at the weekend.
Also it supposedly would take 15 mins for the water to reach houses, so their should be some time to leave or move all the expensive stuff out of the way

...am I to understand then that it's original purpose ( whatever that was) is now extinct? Is it's present status really worth it's potential for destruction I wonder? I know that spare time leisure activities are important but a couple of dozen anglers and a few windsurfers?....hardly worth it to my mind.......commoner :-/ :-/.
Quite. I was thinking the same thing earlier in the week - if the resevoir's use is purely recreational it doesn't need to be 40ft deep, so why was it not kept at a lower, managable (which it wasn't come the weather) level?
